Book Description

1 Mar 2011
On Easter Monday, between 1,000 and 1,500 Irish Volunteers and members of the Irish Citizen Army seized the General Post Office and other key locations in Dublin. The intention of their leaders, including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, was to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent thirty-two county Irish republic. For a week battle raged in the Irish capital until the Rising collapsed. The rebel leaders were executed soon afterwards, though in death their ideals quickly triumphed. lluminating every aspect of that fateful Easter week, The Easter Rising is based on an impressive range of original sources. It has been fully revised, expanded and updated in the light of a wealth of new material and extensive use has been made of almost 2,000 witness statements that the Bureau of Military History in Dublin gathered from participants in the Rising. The result is a vivid depiction of the personalities and actions not just of the leaders on both sides but the rank and file and civilians as well. The book brings the reader closer to the events of 1916 than has previously been possible and provides an exceptional account of a city at war.

A very comprehensive and good overview of the events leading up to the Easter Rising and the Rising itself. I would especially recommend this book for anyone studying this period in history as a level or degree level. A very useful insight into the Rising and extremely well written. I commend the historians Barton and Foy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Easter 1916 in Ireland 21 July 2011
Unlike a lot of books about the Irish Rebellion this book does not seek to overcomplicate the Rising and gives a very readable and understandable account of the weeks events.

Although this is real history I enjoyed reading it in a few sittings as it is as captivating as any good novel

If you want to know what happenied in Ireland during Easter Week in 1916 this is the book for you

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable! 7 Mar 2006
By Andrew Scott - Published on
Barton and Foy have produced one of the definitive sources on the Easter Uprising of 1916. This is an impartial and well-researched examination of the events and persons associated with this great event in Irish history. I can think of few other books that can rival Barton and Foy's Easter Rising for historical detail and broad scope- two things that are rarely done well together. For the history buff it is readable and interesting; the researcher will be pleased with the footnotes, detailed index and wonderful original testimony from participants that is not often found in the common sources. The authors do not seek to praise heroes, but to examine history- something they do quite well.

This was a very comprehensive work about the Easter Rising. It is told in a manner that puts the reader into the history. It is one of the best books I have read about this period of Irish history.
