At last! It`s only been about twenty years since people started asking for a compilation of the best of early Whitesnake. Having had the late 80`s big hits repackaged numerous times, it is nothing short of justice to have this collection of British blues rock nuggets on one CD, with none of the American sounding metal of later years here to act as a crutch (hence the Union Jack cover). I love "Still of the night" etc. but they have been shoved down our throats lately. It`s about time this stuff got a chance to shine on it`s own.
The best thing I noticed about this CD is the swagger it has. Last years "Silver anniversary collection" was a solid record of great songs. However, it never swung the way this does. A lot of thought must have gone into the running order as the pacing is great. There are no real gaps between the songs. Also, the absence of anything from the MTV years makes the songs sound better. When played back-to-back, the early stuff really showed it`s age. The earthy production suits this material, though, Whitesnake`s sound would have fitted in just as well at your local pub or the Hammersmith Odeon.
Coverdale has also picked the best of what`s on offer, which couldn`t always be said of the "...Anniversary collection". I still find it hard to believe that there was no place for arguably the quintessential early Whitesnake song "Lovehunter". Slide guitar, bouncy basslines, sleazy lyrics, big sing-a-long chorus, all the trademarks of classic `Snake. He has redressed the balance here, thankfully. Also, it`s nice to hear "Trouble", "Rough an` ready" and "Lie down" again after so long.

5.0 out of 5 stars the dogs danglies!!! 22 July 2010
By Mr Blackwell TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Originally concieved as a companion to '94's Greatest Hits release but the masters were misplaced/presumed lost(so said David Coverdale at the time).
This is a fantastic compilation of the 1978-84 period so beloved by us all, although unbelievably 'Cryin In The Bl**dy Rain) was missed off again!
Still with a shorter time span to cover we are treated to some album cuts such as 'Love Hunter,Carry Your Load & Wine ,Women and Song,as well as the usual singles.
The disc has an excellent remastered sound, good booklet but as with the 'silver collection' is pretty much redundant now that the 30th anniversary triple disc set is available.

5.0 out of 5 stars the early years... the best years 21 May 2004
Format:Audio CD
... and I missed them! I didn't find Whitesnake until the release of '1987' when rock music collided with my teenage years so my experience of Mr Coverdale and crew was decidedly American in bias. Not necessarily a bad thing, I loved those albums and they certainly presented his 'whisper to a scream' style perfectly.
However, some years later, with money in my pocket and having rediscovered Mr C after a break of some years, I invested in all the early albums. What a treat! A richer, more bluesy sound and an even better showcase for his vocal range with none of the aggressive guitar that so characterised late 80s rock music.
Many of my favourites are here - 'Love Hunter', 'Ready and Willing' (always!), 'Fool for Your Loving' - in a perfect 'best of the early years' blend. I can't take every album with me on my travels, but this is the ideal disk for slot one in the CD player. Anyone who hasn't experienced Whitesnake prior to the 80s US influence should buy this and see what they're missing. I guarantee its money well spent.

its been a while since i'd listerned to any 'snake so i thought i'd give this compilation a try...and i'm glad i did!! i used to watch the 'classic' line up in the 80s and remember what a good show the boys put on and listening to this album brought back the memories and i'd forgot the sheer quality of the songs and musicallity of the players. a great album of rocking blues with Coverdales voice at its best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blues- snake! 31 May 2011
Format:Audio CD
Like a lot of "classic" bands Whitesnake have two distinctive eras: Pre MTV,and post MTV. Many of the old guard will swear blind that the line up that recorded these songs is the best version of Whitesnake, personally I like both! This disc is choc full of quality hard rock music at an amazing price. No matter what version of the band you like this collection is a must have for ANY fan of Whitesnake - hardcore or casual. Many of the classics remain in the live set today such as Aint no love in the heart of the city; Don't Break My Heart Again or Fool For Your Lovin'. Totally recommended for price and content. Buy it!!
