5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good! 25 Jun 2013
By J. Trim
I've chosen the title above deliberately because as you can see from another review the contents on the discs do not match the sleeve notes (nor the list in the product description above). However, the difference is in my opinion an entirely positive thing. I just wish they'd corrected the sleeve and insert.

This is a superb varied selection of live recordings of Joan Sutherland from her early years when the voice was at it's easiest and freshest. It includes the recordings made with Bonynge at the piano for 'Belcantodisc' which ends with the Rondo Finale from 'Emilia in Liverpool'. This is immediately followed by Joan's live performance of the same scene from a broadcast of the opera with orchestra and chorus from 1957, giving the opportunity for the listener to compare them.

There are also the two Queen of the Night arias from 'Die Zauberflote', for once transferred to CD at the correct pitch, i.e. lowered by a semitone and by a tone respectively, as Sutherland actually sang them in the theatre.

In fact the content of CD 1 is almost the same as the Gala disc simply titled 'Joan Sutherland' and previously issued as GL 319. The big difference is the replacement of track 7 with three other tracks not listed on the insert. Also, this set consists of two discs and the second is every bit as exciting as the first.

The loss of the 'Lucia di Lammermoor' Fountain Scene from CD 1 is not as grievous as the previous reviewer makes out, for two very good reasons. Firstly, the 1959 Covent Garden recording of the scene is available on lots of other recordings including the Royal Opera House Heritage Series release. And Secondly ...

1.0 out of 5 stars BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED ! ! ! 17 Nov 2011
In CD I, track 7 IS MISSING. Yes: MISSING. It should have been, according to the booklet, the scene from Lucia di Lammermoor: "Ancor non giunse"-"Regnava nel silenzio"-"Quando rapito in estasi" (Alisa: Margreta Elkins. Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Conductor: Tullio Serafin. London, February 26, 1959. Timing 8:12). There is no trace of such a scene.

Never such thing had happened to me before ! What a shame ! I certainly will not buy anymore CDs issued by the label GALA.

So, don't buy the box to avoid a disappointment.

Amazing that Dame Joan performed at a constantly high level....Always thrilling in a wide range of music....Handel,Mozart,Donizetti,Bellini....
Only misfire in the Queen of the Night....not her kind of role....
4.0 out of 5 stars It's a great representation of the young Sutherland 30 July 2014

It's a great representation of the young Sutherland...I found that the track 7 on cd one was not the opening scene from LUCIA, but something else containing 3 tracks....the remainder of cd one and two are correct....does anyone know who, what, when and where these 3 tracks are....?
