This is a wonderfully researched and tightly constructed account of the earliest English kings and their inter-relationships. It draws upon virtually all that is either known or might be reasonably presumed about them, which in some instances is slight indeed. Kirby's strength as a scholar carries the book, and the reader with it. Inevitably it displays much of the chronological scaffolding he has painstakingly constructed, tested and used to substantially enlarge the structure of our knowledge of this early period. Kirby is a major scholar and everything he has published over the previous five decades is deeply considered, forensic and a joy to read. This book is no exception.
