There have been a lot of reviews for this excellent portable audio solution-this is only the second time I have made a video review(after many years of using Amazon) because I think this is a great product at a great price!-there are so many brands 'out there'and I have had countless desk top speakers mostly 'Creative' who also do a similar version but far more expensive (I'm sure they sound great)but back to THE ELF they really are worth every penny and deliver a sound that punches way above it's price-just my penny's-worth but if you are fortunate enough to own a tablet you will be delighted with these. The have been reviews suggesting some conspiracy about all the positive evaluations I hope this eccentric review will help others to decide/purchase.Charlie(Troyes -FR)ENJOY!

I originally bought this speaker to go in my university room, to save me bringing along my big speaker set at home.

When it first got here, I thought it looked great! Well made, quite aesthetically pleasing. However, once I turned it on, a few problems became apparent:

-the bluetooth technology must be quite old, or I may have had a faulty item, either way, all my devices (iPhone, iPad, MB Pro, iPod nano 7th gen) had trouble connecting to it. 80% of the time I just gave up and connected it via the supplied AUX cable or played through the standard speakers that came with my device.

-there's an LED on top that flashes before you're connected, while you've connected, while it's charging; a.k.a. it's really annoying. Nothing more to be said on that.

-when music is played near top volume, the unit vibrates and shakes so it's unusable on any high shelves. I problem I found out the hard way.

However, when the unit DID finally work, the sound quality was fairly good, just the bass was rather lacking. Perfectly reasonable for a unit this size, and in this price range.

In summary, I'd recommend looking for a newer device than this with newer, more reliable bluetooth technology. If you're really eager for bluetooth, at a very large price jump, I know that the Bose Soundlink Speaker is excellent, if you're got cash to spare. If you're not bothered about bluetooth either way, I'd go for a set of 'normal' speakers (I love my set of Edifier Prisma speakers) since they're reliable and have fantastic sound, however they're obviously not portable. It all boils down to what you need the speakers to do for you.

ETA: My original review is below, however, after having this device just 4 months, mostly using it with the cable and my ipod (which is not bluetooth), the socket has somehow broken. I don't know how it has broken, because it wasn't dropped and generally stays in the same place and isn't moved. I thought it was the cable, so I got a new one, but it still didn't work. As for bluetooth - it still works, although it disconnects every now and then and the battery doesn't seem to last as long. It does not connect to my computer at all.
I do not recommend it.

------------------------

I bought mine from ebay, as they had the best price at the time, but for £25 this is worth every single penny! The only other bluetooth speaker I have ever tried out has been the UE Boom which retails for £150. I am pleased to report this compares very well.. I was not expecting it to be so good despite the good reviews. There may be minor differences in battery life, of course the design (this is not 360 degree sound, but that's not really an issue for me), and maybe the top volume is a little less (but still enough to fill a room/hear from the next room) but the quality of sound is no different. The bass is impressive for such a small size and there's no distortion.
Happy also that it comes with a cable for non-bluetooth items as the majority of my music is on my ipod, which is an old classic and therefore doesn't have bluetooth. Works well with my tablet and phone.

Only niggles? If you are turning it on and using it wired through a non-bluetooth item, it will interrupt your music to say 'pairing' and then again to say that the pairing has not worked. I also get a little irritated with the long pause and noise when you hit top volume - a shorter delay, a smaller beep would work just as well. Not really a big issue though.

After trying several of the main offerings in the £15-£30 bluetooth speaker bracket, I settled on the ELF, as it had the best overall feature set. Reasonable price, good quality sound, decent battery life (although this is only initial reports), and better than average bluetooth range. Also, looks nicely understated, with matt rubberised body and simple buttons with no flashy branding.

Only negatives I can really think of is the alert tones, when using Siri/pairing etc are a bit loud, and the blue light that continually flashes when paired....but this can be sorted with the low tech solution of a bit of black insulation tape.

As an aside, after comparing both, this appears to be exactly the same as the Bolse BT speaker which sells for £7 more. The only difference is the branding, which some may seem as a plus, the speaker grill design and packaging. Everything else is identical down to the sounds/speech alerts.
