Book Description

24 Aug 2011

What links Winston Churchill, Alan Sugar, Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver, David Bailey, Will Smith and countless other high achievers in a huge range of fields?

In this paradigm-shifting book, neuro-learning experts Drs Brock and Fernette Eide describe an exciting new brain science that reveals that people with dyslexia have unique brain structure and organisation. While the differences are responsible for certain challenges with literacy and reading, the dyslexic brain also gives a predisposition to important skills and special talents.

While dyslexics typically struggle to decode the written word, they often also excel in such areas of reasoning as mechanical (required for architects and surgeons), interconnected (artists and inventors); narrative (novelists and lawyers), and dynamic (scientists and business pioneers). The Dyslexic Advantage provides the first complete portrait of the dyslexic brain.

With much-needed prescriptive advice for parents, educators and dyslexics, The Dyslexic Advantage provides the first complete portrait of dyslexia. Supporting their claims with groundbreaking science and interviews with successful dyslexics and innovative teachers, the authors of this essential book show how the unique strengths of dyslexia can be captured for success at home, at school and at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading! 25 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
'Dyslexic Advantage' turns dyslexia on its head, from what can feel like a humiliating handicap into a source of joy and pride.

The authors present compelling, high quality research and scientific evidence from the fields of neuroscience, cognition and education, showing that dyslexia comes with huge advantages. They also include case studies to illustrate their points in a more immediate and personal way, and a wealth of advice and research-based methods for capitalising on the strengths and overcoming or living with the problems of dyslexia at every stage of life, from primary school to the workplace.

It is no exaggeration to say that reading this book can really change the life of a dyslexic person - every single dyslexic individual should read it (or listen to the audio version, which is very well read), and everyone who cares for dyslexics personally or professionally should too. I guarantee that by the time they finish it, non-dyslexics will be more than a little envious of the dyslexic advantage!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dyslexic Advantage 7 Nov 2011
By kym
Format:Paperback
This book is a great book for understanding my Dyslexic son's mind. It gave me a better insight in to what he's strengths may be in adulthood and in his future working life! He has a lot of hurdles to cross throughout his school years, and this book will get us through every low. I highly recommend this book as it helped me to concentrate on the positive side (Advantages) of Dyslexia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ten star book on Dyslexia 30 Jan 2012
By A. Tate
Format:Paperback
The Dyslexic Advantage: Unlocking the Hidden Potential of the Dyslexic Brain

This is a BRILLIANT 10 star book. The line that resonated most for our son is "Dyslexia isn't simply a reading impairment but a reflection of a different pattern of brain organisation and information processing that creates strengths as well as challenges."

All of my sons difficulties at school (he's now in year 5) were explained with amazing clarity by this book. He is the family historian and yet can't remember things from yesterday. This books explains why! He is good at arithmetic and yet struggles to remember any of his times tables. This book explains why! He switches every third word when reading aloud (e.g Ripe for recipe, Proudly for probably, Simple for sample)and yet gets the "gist" of what the book is saying. This book explains why! He was a late speaker and reader. This book explains why!

I now liaise with our school SENCO as a "partner" rather than just being a confused parent who is puzzled by their otherwise bright child struggling at school.
