BRIAN BLESSED RELATES HIS BEGINNINGS IN PREWAR YORKSHIRE, HIS "GANG" HIS START AS A PLASTERER, THE LONG RIDE ON A SMALL BYCYCLE TO WATCH BOXING. THE TRAGIC LOSS OF A VERY GOOD FRIEND. VERY EASY READING IN A WONDERFULLY HUMEROUS STYLE. HE REALLY TAKES YOU TO THE LOCATIONS THAT HE FREQUENTED.

In this book Brian Blessed tells of the joys and hardships of his younger years. He relates his young life with the passion and drive he now has for life itself. The whole book is wonderfully written with a wit that is a joy.

Brian Blessed is larger than life - he has more energy and brass than most of us are used to seeing in a lifetime. I adore him, and look forward to seeing him interviewed whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Blessed grew up during WWII in a Yorkshire neighborhood full of mischief and adventure. At times, The Dynamite Kid reads like a British version of Huck Finn, with little boys pedaling for miles to see their favorite boxer, or gathering newts at the swimming hole. It is at these moments that this book shines.
Unfortunately, the first part of The Dynamite Kid is a bit slapdash. In one single page, Blessed talks about a mining accident, the radio shows of the time, and a trip to the beach! That's quite a lot to go over in just 200 words or so, and some editing might have been a good idea.
There are certain chapters that are lovely to behold: the aforementioned bicycle trip, for instance, and the segment on Blessed starting down the path to acting. I'm still waiting for someone to explain the significance of "China" to me in the portion about National Service training. I thought it was something cultural that I was missing, but my thoroughly British husband had no idea what it meant, either. Because of that, the slow start and the need for editing, I give this three stars instead of five. I still adore Brian Blessed, however, and now I understand him a little better, too.
