5.0 out of 5 stars When the nightmares come true 22 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
A brilliant combination of art and writing makes `The Dylan Dog Case Files' one of those comic books that prove that comics has definitely its place among other forms in both visual art and literature. The book collects seven cases of a `Nightmare Investigator' Dylan Dog. Created by Tiziano Sclavi in 1986, Dylan Dog fast became the best-selling Italian comic book series with over 1 million copies sold a month. This is I believe thanks to Sclavi's dazzling writing that gives his stories a characteristic surreal touch that will appeal to fans of Borges as well as David Lynch.

Dylan Dog is an eccentric private investigator who takes on supernatural cases that the police can't or won't take. With his assistant Felix he hunts zombies and serial killers that raid the streets of London. Dylan is certainly not a typical character in the genre, especially when compared to the comic book heroes from the USA. He is portrayed as an erratic and disconnected character who quickly falls in love with every woman who enters his office. Unlike many other detective characters he often gets lost in his cases and solves them and actually survives by sheer luck and chance. He is heroic in a way that he lives up to his morals but he is definitely not a superhero. His assistant Felix is as useless as Dylan, with one exception: it is him who usually saves Dylan by tossing him a pistol in a nick of time before some zombie kills him. Felix is, however, the character who gives the final touch to the surreal nature of the stories. He's a bottomless well of absurd jokes and picks the most inappropriate moments to share them. In the Italian original he is named Groucho and wears a moustache ridiculous enough to have provoked a legal action from the Marx family.

Brilliant! Couldnt put this down and read it in 2 days flat. The artwork is to die for, why dont they make comic books like this anymore? I used to read these in the original Italian but never got all the jokes by Groucho (renamed Felix in the English translation). Its brilliant - dont even bother contemplate not getting it - I only wish there were more cos Id buy them in a flash!

Im filing these next to my Creepy, Misty and Tales from the Cryptcomics.

Please Dark Horse - translate some more!

I was recommended Dylan dog by an Italian friend. After some investigation I found this book and with some not so subtle hinting my girlfriend brought me for Christmas.

I cannot recommend this book enough the art work is superb and there are some really varied stories with a good mix of horror, comedy and mystery. This comic really does keep you guessing until the end. It is just a shame that there is so few English translations of these sorties around. Hopefully dark horse will translate some more as well as diabolik for us English speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wet dream for geek in you 15 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Bought this for my geeky husban who has an extensive collection in his native Serbian language. He went down on his knees in reverence: a massive volume allowing hours of reading and contemplation of the artwork. Or so does the expert husband say! Worth it just for knowing that if he chose his own present he couldn't have chosen better.

For the comics themselves, not a bad word can be said. They are varied, interconnected, the stories are bizarre and range in tone from classical horror to dream-like fantasy and even heartwarming and tearjerking. There's also a naked lady in most, but she is tightly tied into the plot. And social commentary, too! If you're a fan of italian "giallo" movies, you will surely like it.
The drawing style slightly differs from story to story (which is understandable, as those are from different times and by different artists), but there's still enough coherence and quality. Mike Mignola's illustrations sure look like odd ones out here, the picture of Dylan on the cover a good example - our hero looks strangely like Hellboy here, with a wide body and thin legs.
The paper is rough, looks almost like thick newspaper, and the cover started to peel even before I got to open the book for the first time. You'd probably want to reinforce the edges with sticky tape.
All in all, heartily recommended for the fans of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great comic book! 17 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I was so pleased to see that my favourite Italian comic book is finally translated in English, for all my friends (in England) to get to know! Translation is very good and stories still give you that fantastic sense of what Dylan Dog is all about! Mystery, Paranormal, Nightmares, Horror! 7 of the best stories of what in Italy is a monthly treat since 1986! Recommend this to all Comic Books fans!

Dylan Dog is an institution in Europe, a monthly black and white comic dealing with the adventures of a 'nightmare detective' investigating supernatural crime in London. This edition collects a mini-series of English language editions translated by Dark Horse, with chapter headings by Mike Mignola, in advance of a proposed movie adaptation.

It's great stuff - the stories run longer than English language monthlies, and the extra length is well used to develop character and add lots of twists. The first few stories are modern-day Gothic horror shockers, a little reminiscent of Hellblazer, but the later tales add metafictional complexities which take it well into Sandman territory. For me, the writing bears out these comparisons, and the art is unflashy, but atmospheric and consistently excellent.

There are some issues in translation. Dylan's London is one in which everybody casually carries and uses guns, and the death penalty still applies for murder. The visual detail of London is good, but it does feel rather Italian, and Dylan is very much the romantic Italian male. However, for me this all added to the feel of the strip - a little like watching a 70's 'Giallo' thriller, set in that particularly Italian London peculiar to the genre.

More seriously, Dylan's comedy sidekick, an obsessed Groucho impersonator in the original, is deprived of his moustache in this version. This seems inexplicable - the reputation of the Brothers Marx is surely untouchable, and, as a sincere tribute, 'Felix' could only have helped introduce their work to a new generation. They shaved the moustache off a star - I had to shave a star off my rating!

Still, moustache or no moustache, this is an essential purchase for horror comic fans, and a solid afternoon's reading.
