Product Description

Review

[Of Catherine's most recent book, Face Value]: This book has the authority that comes from a writer who knows what she's talking about. It's interesting, exciting and may provide a warning for the naive. (TES )

An intelligent murder mystery with a realistic sense of how exploitative the fashion industry can be... This is a book about friendship, falling in love, corrupt old men who mistreat young girls and, memorably, London: it is full of detail of real places - street markets, trendy watering holes, gangland haunts, Thameside beaches and arts venues (Sunday Times Children's Book of the Week )

A compelling story of the glamour and dangers of the fast paced world of the fashion scene (Carousel magazine )

Book Description

A gritty urban thriller for teenage readers

A quick read 4 Jun 2010
By Paul M
Format:Paperback
Granted this is a quick and short book it is made extremely good by the way Shehana interacts with her family and what is said between them.

How Shehana responds to the Albanian and the way he reacts to his sister's untimely and grisly death however seems to be a devil may cry attitude with no real depth to the feeling of hurt or frustration to it.

The ending also seems to be incredibly rushed and almost as it it were tacked on, but everybody else in the story line seems to be realistic enough.

Format:Paperback
This is a gripping, powerfully-written thriller in which Shehana, a Bangladeshi Londoner with problems of her own, discovers a dying prostitute on her estate. Having promised to contact the girl's brother, she then becomes embroiled in a sinister world of heroin and secrets, whilst struggling to keep her family duties. Her older brother clearly thinks it's time she got married, and Shehana has already lied to her parents about her university application.

The strength of this novel lies in the utterly convincing character voices - not only Shehana herself (whose conversations with her friend Fozia are so authentic you can hear them in your head) but also Aleks, the murdered prostitute's brother, who can't understand why Shehana isn't honest with her family. An exciting and taut read, exploring the expectations imposed by different cultures.
