Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Critics have tended to dismiss Duke Ellington's music for his Sacred Concerts as below his usual high standards but Stan Tracey, one of Britain's most independent-minded jazzmen, knows better. With Canon Bill Hall assisting, Tracey chose and arranged most of the best pieces from Duke's three different Sacred Concerts to become organic parts of a traditional Mass. This was presented at Durham Cathedral in 1990 and 1993 and the musical sections were recorded recently. Tracey's large band contains excellent musicians including his son Clark, Gerard Presencer, Malcolm Griffiths, Alan Barnes and Jay Craig but important contributions also come from vocalists Tina May and Niall Hoskin, the Durham Cathedral Choir and tap-dancer Will Gaines. Tracey's own piano playing firmly enlivens the proceedings and he retains the Ellington spirit without mere imitation. The instrumental soloists have their own styles to offer and overall this is a moving and uplifting demonstration of the breadth and depth of Ellington's legacy. --Graham Colombé

5.0 out of 5 stars A Labour of Pure Love 31 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
Stan Tracey's recreations of the Ellington Sacred Music are a labour of pure love. This is music to uplift the soul and played in a cathedral context it does just that. To hear Pete King deliver his sublime rendition of 'Come Sunday' is a profound musical experience. Though this is a high point it is the icing on a very rich cake. Listening to this music on CD is only an echo of the live cathedral experience, but hey, there are few echoes that sound as good as this. Tracey has not only recreated Duke Ellington's music, he has created a true tribute.
