The Duke - The first book in the Knight Miscellany series.
The Storyline:
Dolph is infatuated with Belinda (our heroine) so he has her father put in jail and gets her fired from her job, just so that she has to marry him. Bel refuses and ends up becoming a courtesan. Robert Knight (Knight - sigh!) Duke of Hawkscliffe, thinks he can use Bel to find out the truth (about a murder) from Dolph because of his infatuation with her. So Robert strikes a deal with Bel. He becomes her protector and she has to pretend to be Robert's Mistress. Gradually over the Season, they start to fall in love and Robert protects, cares and even risks his life for Bel.
Unfortunately, the scheming Earl of Coldfell offers Robert a plum political position in exchange for marrying his daughter Juliet. Bel won't be mistress to a married man, so will Robert come to his senses in time and realise that Bel means more to him than risking any scandal? Will Robert agree to marry Juliet? Can Robert live without Bel? Is Dolph the murderer? Will they all live happily ever after? Read it and find out.
- Skim read Chapters 1&2, and start from Chapter 3.
Why buy?
I re-read it time and time again and still enjoy it. I have read this story countless times now and it is such a FANTASTIC book. The characters, storyline, detail, places Foley describes and romance are all excellent. She makes you feel part of the story and you really want them to live happily ever after. Bel is an intelligent and beautiful heroine who has made the best of the bad situations she has fallen into. The characters really come to life and are everything you could ask for in a Hero and Heroine. Foley succeeds in allowing the story to flow with just enough detail and does a brilliant job ensuring she has the correct English expressions (some American authors don't do this!!) and place names in England, e.g. That the River Ouse is in York and walking through the Shambles, or that Robert and Jacinda would take offence at Bel saying Westmorland is practically in Scotland!
I love the glimpses of Alec Knight (Robert's ½ Brother), Jacinda (Sister) and Lizzie (Ward) before they have their own Knight stories. When Alec meets Bel for the first time, she realises what a woman magnet he is, and so focuses all her attention on Robert instead- even though they are only acting out a charade. It is a lovely touch that Alec has (a small) part to play in these two's happiness - encouraging our hero Robert.
Woven neatly into the story are some lovely side plots, including the romance of Clive Griffon, children, courtesans, politics(!) and of course, some `naughtiness' which all add to the fabric of the story. I don't particularly like the Cover Art, but that's not the stories fault! All the Knight stories are excellent and can be read independently from each other, but I would start with this one first. The Knight Miscellany series all link directly (brothers/sisters etc) but the books also link with the Spice Trilogy, by Gaelen Foley. If you like Historical Romance, buy this book.
