Book Description

“The Duel: A military Tale” is one of the best-known short stories written by Joseph Conrad (1857-1924). First published in 1906, the tale is centered around the irreconcilable rivalry between two French officials serving Napoleon’s army.

This edition is enriched with two other Conrad’s texts: “A Personal Record”, an autobiographical work written in 1912, and “Notes on My Books”, a 1920 essay on his writings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Engaging Tale 17 Dec. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Read the novella and see the excellent film adaption ('The Duellists' - a real visual treat)! Two officers of Napolean's army duel it out, periodically, over a 15 year stretch as times and history and personal circumstances change. For what reason? Enjoy this thoroughly engaging tale and find out! Recommended.

Doing things in reverse order I saw the film some years ago and thought it was an excellent translation of book to screen. Now I've finally read and thoroughly enjoyed the book and its enthralling story of French cavalry officers, pausing as they campaigned across Europe over many years, to fight a protracted duel over a perceived insult.
Conrad's story-telling is marvellous and captures the fiery personalities involved, members of Napoleon's famed light cavalry.
Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Napoleonic Pyschopath 17 Oct. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Excellent novella. Would have liked it even more if it had covered more historical details though I suppose that would suit historians. Also worth seeing the beautiflly crafted film 'The Duellists' featuring the excellent Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel.

"Napoleon I., whose career had the quality of a duel against the whole of Europe, disliked duelling between the officers of his army. The great military emperor was not a swashbuckler, and had little respect for tradition." (Joseph Conrad The Duel)

Years ago I watched the film The Duelists , excellent film .It made me curious as to the novel The Duel .The novel is superb , I really enjoyed it , well written and with a surprising ending after all the irrational violence expressed in the multiple duels .
I love Conrad and I am reading other novels written by him that are also excellent

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like swords and period tales 14 Aug. 2014

This is a five star short story--no question about it. Conrad gets into the head of the protagonist and we can feel the anxiety and fear going into each duel. All the more fascinating because it's based on a true story. If you like swords and period tales, you'll like The Duel.
