If you are about to pay for a drum kit, either for yourself or maybe your offspring, this is the book to get. There are detailed explanations of all the components that make up a drum kit to help you choose correctly (for example for snare drums: shell, lugs and head construction together with the effect on the all important sound, style of music and life of the kit is covered). The upside and downside to budget, mid range and high end kits are considered for new, second hand and collectable kits. Compact and vintage kits are not forgotten.
You will also want this book when your first kit arrives, for the advice on assembling it and the vital art of tuning. Once you start playing the maintenance information will be most helpful. You will find this book useful at every stage of being a drummer. There are even tips on turning professional and gigging. Geoff Nicholls has an interest in the history of the drum kit and this is put to good effect throughout the book.
Finally there are lots of hints and tips from famous drummers.
The level of detail is truly impressive but more impressive is how readable the book is with lots of clear illustrations. As musicians most of the books that drummers buy are music books, this book does not have a single bar of music but is never the less one of the most useful drumming books I own.
