Product Description

Review

Engaging and fun to read, The Dream Team Nightmare is jam-packed with fresh ideas and techniques that are easy to adopt. It's also a great springboard for follow-up reading on the bigger ideas such as systems thinking. I would heartily recommend it to everyone to share with their teams.--Victoria Morgan-Smith Scrum Master The Dream Team Nightmare is a breath of fresh air in comparison to other books on project theory and process out there. It provides you with a wealth of information to make better decisions on your project.--James Major Project Manager Network Rail The Dream Team Nightmare is a crash course in Agile. I strongly recommend it to all readers involved in building software products, from technical to product people.--Dyan Corutiu Software Developer The Dream Team Nightmare is an innovative and entertaining read that helped me learn some new ideas and techniques, had me thinking about how I work, and kept me wanting to continue the adventure.--Karl Scotland Agile Coach Rally Software The Dream Team Nightmare is packed with tips and concrete techniques for how to do just about everything an Agile Coach does. Portia's entertaining book is totally unlike any other Agile book you've ever read.--Liz Sedley Author of Agile Coaching This is the most fun read I've had in a long time. I anticipate that it will have the same dramatic effect for Agile methods as The Goal did for Systems Thinking. You should read it at least twice, once for enjoyment and a second time for deeper learning.--Matt Gelbwalks Transformation Coach North Main, LLC The Dream Team Nightmare shows in a gentle yet concrete way how an Agile coach works. A great book for anyone working to introduce Agile to others.--Michael McCullough Founder of Tastycupcakes.org and Executive Technical Director at Quadrus Development

Firstly, "The Dream Team Nightmare" is a great story. The tale is compelling, and if you've been on an underperforming agile team before you will recognise the problems and personalities involved.

Secondly, there is some great coaching advice in here - listening to people, being inclusive, suggesting options rather than enforcing implementation.

I read the Kindle version, and the links between chapters worked surprisingly well.

This book puts you into a world where you are an agile coach brought into a company to help their development teams work through problems with agile adoption, process, individuals and communication with the larger organisation.

Each chapter builds the story, demonstrates one or more techniques in that context, and presents a choice at the end. Your job is to decide what to do next and jump to the corresponding chapter. As in real life, an accumulation of "wrong" answers leads to you leaving the adventure early. The book is structured so that you can retrace your steps to find where you went wrong and learn what was the right decision to make.

You will find a lot of techniques that are modelled well in the narrative, plenty of starting material for you to take and research independently and you will almost certainly learn something even if you aren't trying!

The book is very quick to read all the way through and is a lot of fun. I learned more than I thought I would but the downside of this book is that there really aren't any others like it in the field. It seems even more of a chore to go back to reading real books.

This book has been my number one on my summer list and has been a great find. I deal with many Agile teams day-to-day and the way the book is written makes it both very easy to read and extremely relevant.
It follows an Agile coach who is given the task of supporting and coaching a failing team. It not only provides practical tools for different situations, but it also shows the relational side of agile/project teams which I have missed in other books. It is a short read, but it has given me plenty to think about, including one 'penny-dropped' moment around the good practice of the coach diary.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Portia and I can see that the scenarios that she develops in the book through the main character shows her own energy and experience.

What you are holding in your hands, is a rare piece of art. Art usually is created in a very short time, yet it can not be created without the lifetime and the experience of the artist. Not only did Portia managed to put so much wisdom into this book, she also reinvented the format of agile books.
Although it looks like a book, it's also a course, an adventure, a quiz, dare I say even a fairytale?
This was the funniest, most inspiring agile book I have ever read. It instantly became my favorite book to give away.

Seeing how different characters react to a certain tool or topic gives me the confidence to try them out. The tone is gentle, non-preachy and provides personal insights into how a coach should work. I would suggest every Scrum Master read it or something similar every 6 months. Any chance you can write more Agile Adventures to meet this demand?

Reading `The Dream Team Nightmare' is a fun and involving way to understand the basics of Agile, the common challenges practitioners face, and practical ways to address them in your organization. Portia brings in tools as part of the story that those new to Agile, and perhaps not so new, can put into immediate use. It's a great read!
