Son Of Sea - The Dreaded Green Bag (Independent)
Son Of Sea is one Martin MacDonald, a singer-songwriter based in both Australia and the UK. His latest project, "The Dreaded Green Bag" is an ambitious Video-EP - the music is accessed and bought via the usual channels, and then you head over to his website or YouTube to see the visuals. As far as I can tell, the videos are work in progress, with only a selection of them available to view, so let's concentrate on the music.

MacDonald's a purveyor of fine British indie-pop. The five tracks bring to mind artists and bands like Robyn Hitchcock, Squeeze and XTC at their most fathomable. He's a handy wordsmith, and with "A Man With No Tea In Him" he's fashioned my favourite song title of the week and written a dainty lyric to match. "We Should Be Giants" exposes a Ray Davies influence, surely a prerequisite of any first-rate Anglo singer-songwriter, and "Cow's Breath" would've sounded perfectly at home on Stiff Records, circa 1980. These are terrific songs with tunes that stick like glue. If classic British songwriting and pop rocks your boat, then Son Of Sea should be your first port of call.
