Product Description

Tyler and Lucinda have to spend summer with their Uncle Gideon, a farmer. They think they're in for lots of sheep, horses, and pigs. But when they arrive they discover that Ordinary Farm is, well, no ordinary farm. The bellowing in the barn comes not from a cow but from a dragon. The thundering herd in the valley? Unicorns. Uncle Gideon's farmhouse never looks the same twice. Plus, there's a flying monkey, a demon squirrel, and farmhands with strange powers. The place seems like an adventure. But when darker secrets surface and Uncle Gideon and his creatures are threatened, Lucinda and Tyler must act. Will they be able to save the dragons, the farm—and themselves?

The husband-and-wife team of Tad Williams & Deborah Beale publish the first volume in their Ordinary Farm series (which will eventually run to five volumes). THE DRAGONS OF ORDINARY FARM is aimed at a somewhat younger audience than Tad Williams' other books, but his adult readers will probably like it just as well.

The two main protagonists Tyler and Lucinda, who are unwillingly sent away to the suppossedly boring farm of a very distant relative to spend their summer there, are quickly drawn into the many secrets of Ordinary farm, its strange inhabitant and its even stranger livestock.

The book is fast-paced despite the large cast of characters and the plot thickens quickly. The tone is modern (think of "Otherland for kids") and the story is less straightforward fantasy but rather science fantasy. Many secrets are revealed and some mysteries solved, but although the first book offers closure, the story is far from over and many mysteries remain intact to be solved in future volumes. Perfect summer book for kids and parents alike.

Tyler and Lucinda are not looking forward to spending their summer with an uncle they've never met or heard about. And they're sure they'll be bored to tears when they learn their Uncle Gideon is the owner of Ordinary Farm. Their imagined summer of cows, sheep, and tedious farm chores is far from the adventurous summer they'd like.

However, Ordinary Farm is not your average farm. The cow in the barn is an enormous dragon. The leaping sheep of the fields are unicorns. The chicken coops are filled with griffons and other mysterious creatures. The other outbuildings house magical secrets Tyler and Lucinda never imagined.

The boring summer the two expected turns out to be the most exciting and thrilling one of their lives. Of course, it could also be their last. A sinister plot is afoot and it's up to Tyler and Lucinda to unravel it and save Ordinary Farm and its secrets.

I enjoyed my trip to Ordinary Farm, and I loved spending time with the magical animals and wonderful characters in the world created by Williams and Beale.

I am eagerly looking forward to more adventures with the characters and creatures of Ordinary Farm. This is the beginning of a series that promises further revelation and extraordinary fun, and I will be among the first in line to get my hands on the sequel.

I have to first confess that I am an avid fan of Tad Williams work. I also enjoyed the Harry Potter books and miss the annual trek to buy a copy at midnight. So when I saw that The Dragons of Ordinary Farm, a book suitable for young adults and children was going to be released I was quite excited- maybe it would be the start of another immersive series of books?

Dragons of Ordinary Farm is written by the husband and wife team of Tad Williams and Deborah Beale. The story is very well written and immersive. It reminded me a little of when I read ET and also of the magical potential of Harry Potter- I can easily see this being adapted for the cinema!

The story builds up nicely- and made me wander at all the possible future stories that could develop. Having finished, I now can't wait for the next book to be written (Witches of Ordinary Farm).

I'm now going to be reading Dragons to my children- I'm sure they'll enjoy it as much as I did!

A very enjoyable read- with the promise of more to come!
