A Christmas treasure 25 Sep 2012
By Culper, Jr. - Published on Amazon.com

This undiscovered gem of a book has been a Christmastime staple in my family since 1902. Owen Wister is best known for The Virginian, but he makes a major departure from that genre for this book. Set in 13th century England, The Dragon of Wantley is, in Wister's own words, a burlesque. He freely mixes charming anachronisms into his medieval setting. If possible, find the Fourth Edition, which includes several amusing additions, in which Wister takes on some of his literary critics.

I have now bought 5 copies of this book, as well as the one I inherited from my father. Buy it, treasure it and pass it along. Some day, I hope, the BBC will make a film version of it. Read it, and see if you agree that Brian Blessed was born to play the Lord of Wantley Manor.
