5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful imaginative pictures make this special 26 Sep 2005
By ELH Browning VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
I picked this up while browsing in a book shop the other day. It stood out from the ranks of brightly-coloured picture books because of an ethereal twilight quality to its illustrations. George see dragons wherever he goes, and if the reader looks carefully, they too will spot tails from pockets, and dragons perched on chimney pots. The dragons begin to follow George around causing trouble and it's time for him to return them to great wilderness from whence they came. So he builds a beautiful dragon-shaped machine for them to follow home. And then George goes home leaving thoughts of dragons behind.... or has he? It's a gentle story which has been made into something rather special by the beautiful imaginative presentation and my children love it. Perfect for ages 2-5ish.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated book for littles 22 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I first borrowed this book from the library and we all loved it so much: I had to buy it. My children, six and four, loved the illustrations, which are dreamlike and involving. The story is touching, funny and has a wonderful twist at the end. The words are relativly simple, but as it is well written, it can be enjoyed on many levels. I would have thought anyone who loved dragons, of any age, would find this book charming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting story brought to life by the music 9 Jun 2007
By Rhi
Format:Paperback
A wonderful story of a lonely little boy called George and his love of dragons. The mischievious dragons become too difficult for George to look after so he builds a flying dragon machine and takes the dragons back to their home land. George is reunited with his family after quite an adventure and realises that he is greatly loved and doesn't need to feel lonely. The background music is the key to the atmosphere of the book. Beautifully and sensitively written, you imagine that you are right there with George in his dragon machine. We often take the CD on car journeys as it's become a favourite of my 6 year old. It's so easy to imagine the illustrations in the book by listening to the music and narration. A real winner!

The tone of this book is very sad & dreary. The illustrations are very dark and look like they are aimed at an older child, but the words are very simple as if aimed at a younger child. Our son is almost 3 years old and absolutely adores dragons, so he enjoys pointing out the hidden dragons on each page and he enjoys the twist at the end. However, when I first read it I almost didn't continue as I felt it was far too negative. George goes "unseen, ignored and overlooked" - seriously this child is totally neglected!! George basically has to run away for his parents to start paying attention to him, not a very good message to send to young children.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice story with beautiful illustrations 14 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a lovely book with a 'hidden' message for children (and adults I suppose!). George sees dragons everywhere, but feels that they go unnoticed to everyone but him. Eventually the dragons start to cause problems for George, which he must explain, until he realises that they must be returned to their own 'land'. Only when he can help them to leave can George start to feel 'noticed' himself! Wonderful illustrations too!!!

Expected CD with this - that is what was stated. Book okay. Should not say CD if there isn't one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragon Machine 27 Nov 2012

I bought this book to use in my shared reading lessons in the primary school where I teach. The illustrations are wonderful and created lots of interest. The audio disk and story were thoroughly enjoyed by the children and cause much discussion!
