Don't get me wrong - I love Dr. Seuss. This anthology is a classic - but mainly due to the strength of "The Lorax", which along with the two Cat in the Hat books are surely his finest work.
This beautifully presented book contains three long stories, McElligot's Pool, The Lorax and Scrambled Eggs Super; and one very short story - The Zax. The first two are illustrated in full colour, whilst the the latter have a limited colour palette of three or four colours. Illustrations are generally excellent and fun.
Pros - The Lorax is a very very fine childrens' story - you will have to go far and wide to find a better one. The environmental theme is there, but the story is so good that children won't notice until they have the time and faculties to think about it.
The Zax is also a very good, if somewhat succinct story. It's good for compromising with young children about having two stories read to them.
Cons - Scrambled Eggs Super and McElligots Pool are only so-so. These two come from the "flight-of-fancy" school of Dr. Seuss stories, which are a long long way behind the tales like Cat in the Hat and The Lorax. You basically get a premise such as fish, or eggs, or a circus - followed by about twenty to thirty pages of nonsensical descriptions of wild and wacky beasts. This is fun and well written, but ultimately a little boring and doesn't really take you anywhere.
Still, it's better to buy this anthology and have all four than to buy just the books you want seperately. Furthermore, I'm not sure that the Lorax is even available in hardback. It's strangely, also quite rare outside of this edition.
