The year is 70A.D. Pompeii, sitting at the foot of Vesuvius, is at the high point in its development. People come to the city from far and wide to try and make their luck in the city. So far nobody has dreamed of the danger that will bury all of their dreams under mountains of ash not ten years later. Who will survive the eruption of Vesuvius unscathed? The simple rules make it easy to get started with this game by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, one in which a lot of tactical know-how is required. But a little luck is needed too, in order to bring your pieces out of the city at the right time and have this unconventional board game decided in your favour.

This is a simple but still challenging game which requires players [2-4] to save the citizens of Pompeii from the AD79 eruption. It contains a simplified map of Pompeii, cards, lava tiles, 4 different colours of citizens and a volcano.

The game falls into two halves: first you have to place citizens in the city by playing cards to place them in buildings, second, once the eruption has started you have to move them out of the gates before they are engulfed by lava. The player who saves the most citizens wins.

Gameplay is simple and card- or tile-driven. Each player starts with 4 cards and plays one per round, drawing a new one from the deck to replace it. The cards allow you to place one citizen in the numbered building shown. Tactics are required to select the best buildings for escape, and also to maximise bonus citizens in certain circumstances ("relatives"). "Omen" cards allow you to throw an opponent's citizen into the volcano!

Once the eruption begins all card play ceases and lava tiles are drawn from a bag. Any square occupied by these is impassible and any citizens within are killed. Each player in turn draws and places a tile, then moves two of their citizens. The game completes when all citizens have escaped or died OR the last lava tile has been drawn.

The rules are simple enough that a 7-year old can play (and enjoy) it, but the tactics are complex enough to keep adults interested as well. This has rapidly become a family favourite!
