Review

“Trust and treachery blend into a suspenseful, satisfying story about the choices that we make.” The Times’ Christmas Roundup

"A contemporary thriller so brilliantly written that for two hours I almost forgot to breathe." Amanda Craig, The Times

"An enthralling variation of the 'Who am I' theme." Irish Times

Praise for The Ant Colony:
"[Valentine] has a magical narrative voice that instantly engages, and her tale… is riveting. Valentine writes so beautifully and so convincingly that you're instantly swept into the mystery of these people's lives." Amanda Craig, The Times

"[Valentine] writes with increasing assurance, and The Ant Colony has all the makings of another award-winner… Valentine's observation and language is both unexpected and refreshing," Nicolette Jones, Children's Book of the Week, Sunday Times Culture

"[Bohemia] is a wonderful, three-dimensional character who woos and captivates the reader. Valentine… has produced a story that is both witty and entertaining… it is charmingly written." Daily Telegraph

"This is a fine piece of slice-of-life fiction, warm but not cosy, neatly structured and credible." FT Weekend

"A moving narrative of belonging, love and redemption."
School Librarian

"I think [Valentine] really is getting better and better with everything she writes. The Ant Colony has a very raw emotional honesty about it that is tempered past heartbreak by a vivid imagination and wonderful sense of humour. [It's} completely gorgeous, utterly charming, funny, sweet, sad, and underneath it all, very, very real." TheBookBag.co.uk

Product Description

Two boys. One identity. He can change his life if he says yes…

An explosive new mystery from the award-winning author Jenny Valentine, The Double Life of Cassiel Roadnight is the story of a boy who assumes the identity of a missing teenager and in-so-doing unearths a series of shattering family secrets – and the truth about who he really is.

With all the classic hallmarks of a Jenny novel – a fantastically strong, sensitive and memorable first person narration; themes of loss and betrayal, family secrets and personal identity; truly quality writing that is 'literary' but never inaccessbile or pretentious, this is the thrilling new novel from the author of Finding Violet Park.

Since I first read and enjoyed "Finding Violet Park" I have been keen to read each new book produced by Jenny Valentine, and, and I have felt that each new book has been better than the last! Can she keep this up, I wonder? Time will tell, but so far I have not been disappointed and she certainly has a growing army of teenage fans.
The main character is a lad known as Chap who is completely alone in the world and is facing a very uncertain future. He is mistaken for another boy, Cassiel Roadnight whose face appears on "Missing Person" posters and astonishingly, this other boy's family take him into their lives convinced their lost son has returned. It looks as if Chap's life is about become much more comfortable, but one person has good reason to know that Chap cannot possibly be Cassiel and therein lies the danger. There are smaller everyday problems to be dealt too as Chap has no idea about Cassiel's friends, his likes and dislikes or events in family history so he has to think quickly as there is no-one he can turn to for help
The story is exciting and I found I was actually holding my breath on more than one occasion. Again Jenny Valentine has introduced us to some interesting and well drawn characters and she also illustrates once again that there is no such thing as a `normal' family.

I was intrigued why the teen would choose to be Cassiel. The reason is actually logical. He looks like him, and wants to be loved. Who wouldn't want that? The problem with pretending to be someone else, is that he doesn't know why people treat him the way they do. He tries to get answers, to find out more about Cassiel's life. That proves problematic until he bumps into someone Cassiel knew. When he does, he unearths a life which was full of dark secrets, secrets which will forever change his life. They are secrets which will put him in danger, which will potentially put others in danger. Living someone's life without knowing what they were like is a pretty big decision to make. Cassiel (not Cassiel!) has to live with the expectation that he will be found out at every turn. Cassiel's mother may be pleased to see him, but the rest of the family aren't as excited, as Cassiel/not Cassiel finds out. The ending had me blinking several times at how the clues had been well hidden in the story.

A nearly perfect book 30 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
I had never read this author's work before. The story intrigues most of the way and made me cry at the end, a sure sign of a good book, because the tears were of joy and relief.
