5.0 out of 5 stars The Double-Crested Cormorant 23 July 2012

The book arrive in a timely manner in excellent condition. I really enjoyed reading about the historical, ecological, economic and political impact of the Double-Crested Cormorant on the Great Lakes and Mississippi. You can see how the fishermen of the Great Lakes view the DC Cormorant and its perceived impact on the tourist industry (fishing) and how they scapegoat the cormorant. The Wildlife Management perspective is also provided so that the reader can see both sides of the picture (story). The same scenario occurs in the Gulf Coast with the catfish
farmers. You get both sides of the story. I thought that this book gave a very balanced view.

What you don't get is pictures of cormorants and how to distinguish them from other types of cormorants.
5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew Double Crested Cormorants could be so interesting? 24 Mar 2012

Well, the cormorants in Dennis Wild's new book are fascinating, or rather, their fate at the hands of sports fishermen and catfish growers is fascinating. Mr. Wild has done a staggering amount of research for this book and he offers an even handed view of a species of predator who has been too successful since the banning of DDT. The cormorant is a fish eater and as their ranks have expanded they are being labeled pests by people who also eat fish and depend on fish for their livelihood...but that is not the whole story. The book is written for the layperson....in that there is a narrative to carry along the non-biologist. I certainly would recommend this to the general public and those who care about our planet.
