Product Description

When a US senator turns up dead with his throat slit, retired CIA operative Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) is sure it bears the mark of infamous Soviet assassin Cassius. The only problem is that Cassius was thought to have been killed years ago. Forced back into service, Paul is teamed with a hotshot FBI agent Ben Geary (Topher Grace) who believes that Cassius has been active all this time. As the pair get closer to the shocking truth, Shepherdson is forced to re-examine everything he thought he knew, in this edge of your seat espionage thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining thriller 29 Feb 2012
By PJ Rankine TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
The basic storyline for this film is that a US senator who may be dirty is murdered by an assassin and all the signs point to it being a Russian agent known by the code name 'Cassius'. Richard Gere as retired CIA agent Paul Shepherdson spent most of his career hunting down Cassius and his team and is convinced that he is dead but CIA Director Martin Sheen drags him out of retirement and pairs him up with a hotshot young FBI agent to track him down once and for all. I guessed who Cassius is very early on in the film (in fact when I watched a trailer) and the reveal is way too early for this sort of film but there are plenty more twists and some realistic action scenes. This film doesn't feature any big set piece special effects but the acting is solid and the story will keep you entertained to the end.
The transfer to blu ray is spot on and the soundtrack competent but it won't rock your system.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacklustre 31 Jan 2013
Format:DVD
I should confess that Richard Gere is not one of my favourite actors. However, how he got duped into this weak espionage thriller raises questions about his judgement. The story line is creaky, corny and underpowered. Topher Grace may have acted his heart out but Gere and Sheen were on automatic transmission, no doubt because they realised that the screenplay was pretty awful.

The lack of tension and ability to bond with the main protagonists probably consigned this movie to a 'direct to DVD' release in the UK. I would have been very disappointed if I had paid good money to see this meagre offering in a cinema.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent spy thriller 24 Feb 2013
Format:DVD
One of the major problems with `The Double' is the trailer advertising it. If you've seen it, it tells you most of the story (and one of the twists). However, I only found that out by reading the internet forums about this movie. I suppose I fortunate enough not to see the trailer, hence I quite enjoyed finding out what was happening as it went along.

It's nothing too revolutionary - old dog spy (Gere) paired with up and coming spy (Grace) - it's effectively a mismatch/buddy-cop film but with spies. It flits between action and talking, with a few surprises thrown into the mix. Plus it isn't too long, so it fits everything in and quite nicely.

But, although it's a decent watch, it probably could have been better. It gives away one of the surprises too early, which may lead some to lose interest. However, at least there are a few more twists to come which I'm guessing the writer hoped would make up for it.

In short, it's not bad, but not a classic. Plus, avoid watching its trailer at all costs. Long gone are the days when a trailer is made to tease and draw you to a movie without revealing anything. I decided to watch the trailer AFTER I'd seen the film and I can see what people meant about it. I really don't know what the film-makers were doing with the trailer - it's effectively a ninety minute film condensed into a couple of minutes.

Overall this is a decent and entertaining production for which you have to keep expectations low on all levels in order to enjoy it.

Early in the film we are shown that Gere is in fact an ex-Soviet assassin, so that isn't the expected twist. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak spy movie
This is one boring spy movie. Honestly, after 20 minutes, I started constantly looking at the "remaining minutes" of my blue ray player. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Gere film, could be better.
Worth a watch, however, its soon obvious whats going on pretty early. Nothing to tax the brain, still worth a watch though.

It was enjoyable with some good action phases. As it went on you started to get the result of ' who-dunnit ' in your mind. It was not boring just a movie to sit down and watch. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Gere is a Smooth Operator
'The Double' is a spy-mystery thriller that had a low key release in 2011 and went unnoticed. The critical response was negative and the box-office was not kind either. Read more
