Product Description

CD Description

* A one-man operation run from Vine Street, Hollywood, for more than two decades by former entertainer Lew Bedell, the Doré label launched the careers of Phil Spector and Jan & Dean, releasing a wide range of early LA rock, doo wop and soul.

* Doré began as a subsidiary of Era, a Hollywood label best known for mainstream pop hits such as `Chanson D'Amour' and `The Wayward Wind'. In 1958, it got off to a flying start with `To Know Him Is To Love Him' by the Teddy Bears, a worldwide hit, followed by Jan & Dean's `Baby Talk'.

* The major labels had lost touch with the street and it was largely left to LA's scattering of independents to set teenagers' turntables spinning on the west coast. Some went in the blink of an eye but Dore stayed, moving seamlessly from rock and pop into soul music in the mid-60s.

* Herb Alpert, Shel Talmy and Mike Curb were just a few who brought their first productions to Doré and there are some interesting connections: aside from Spector and Jan & Dean, the Walker Brothers, and Vince Taylor all come into it to create an engrossing snapshot of the times.

* 25 of the 28 tunes on this first volume of the Doré catalogue appear on legitimate CD for the first time, including previously unissued rockabilly from cult figure Joel Scott Hill, two ultra-rare rock instrumentals by Bobby Fry, some exquisite doo wop, and early teen rockers from John Maus of the Walker Brothers.

* The deluxe and generous package includes a 17,000 word 48-page newly-researched profile of Doré and Lew Bedell, artist biogs, and many never-before-seen photos and memorabilia.

Solid Enough 19 Sep 2011

This cd from 'Ace records' comes with a comprehensive colour booklet (which deserves 1 star alone, 2 stars only for the music). Excellent sound quality, all packaged up in a slipcase. As for the music - which comes from the small independent L.A outfit Dore' from 1958-67 (even though the title of the cd is 1958-64). Overall it's a mixed bag of Doo wop, Instrumentals, Pop and Soul tracks, which don't really get above being average/good, theres nothing truly outstanding here in my opinion. A couple of good tracks are 'Every once in a while' by The Debonaires and 'Someday' by Cam Morris with Don Coats Crusaders. Overall it's an ok listen, perhaps it's not for the casual music buyer. (Note: An excellent Dore' compilation containing Soul & Northern Soul was released in 2004 called 'The Northern Soul of Dore' - Rare Masters Volume 1 & 2).

This is named as Vol 1 indicating there's more on the way.
The 40+page booklet is enclosed seperately inside the slip cae and is at least an hour's read.
Its like a potted history of the L A music scene with all the major players coming in and out.
Including Phil Spector who isn't on here because Dore's biggest hit with the Teddy Bears is on another Ace collection which is in the Golden Age series.Instead there's a revival of the song from 3 years later and a short essay spread over 7 pages about the song and the subsequently increasing odd behaviour of Spector which seemed to start the minute the single had sold its first 100 copies!!
Fascinating stuff which has rooted out an early single by John & Judy (Maus) a brother and sister act which was the start of the future Walker Brothers

Oscure songs and a great book included. 10 Nov 2011

Dore records had produced some very obscure songs and this C.D. represents a good selection.
Although the obvious hits of Jan & Dean are not included except for Baby Talk, this C.D. gives you an idea of why other releases were not played on the radio.
The book that comes with the C.D. is worth the price alone.
All songs are MONO and I wish "Baby, Baby all the time by the superbs was in Stereo.
It's a later 1960's release so I was expecting it to be in stereo.
I can't wait to see what Volume 2 has to offer.
