Book Description

15 Jun 1992 Pelham Dogs

Discover the truth about our canine friends in Bruce Fogle's The Dog's Mind.

How do dogs perceive the world about them? How do they see, hear, learn and relate to their owners? How large are their brains, what is their emotional make-up? Why do they suffer from stress, anxiety and how can it be coped with? Incorporating the latest thinking and research on the psychology of the dog, The Dog's Mind by Bruce Fogle will be an essential text for all those professionals involved with dogs, and for the seriously interested dog owner.

Bruce Fogle DVM, MRCVS lives in London where he runs a veterinary practice. He also lectures at veterinary colleges internationally on the subject of animal behaviour.

Product Description

From the Back Cover

"Quite simply, this is an excellent book. It is well-written, with snatches of dry humour. It should be mandatory reading for anybody who keeps a dog or has intentions of so doing." - R.W.F. Poole, Daily Telegraph

How do dogs perceive the world about them? How do they see, hear, learn, relate to their owners? How large are their brains, what is their emotional make up? Why do they suffer from stress and how can it be coped with?

Over the last ten years a substantial body of knowledge has been built up about the psychology of dog behaviour. Combining twenty years of practical experience as a veterinary clinician with a personal knowledge and understanding of the latest international research, Dr Bruce Fogle has written the most inclusive and relevant book on how the canine mind works.

This book is fantastic, other reviewers haven't understood the intentions of this book. It isn't intended for the general dog owner, i am doing a behaviourist course, and need to know not only the effects of a behaviour, but how and why that behaviour occurs, and be able to refer to how the dogs brain (and mind) works in relation to this behaviour. If you just want a book that will tell you how to re-train a problem dog this isn't the book for you. BUT if you are TRULY interested in canine behaviour, and why they behave as they do, and are willing to discover the indepth truth (which does touch on the original scientists who discovered most of what we now know about dogs- of course using what we now class as neanderthall techniques). This book is for a committed learner, it is not a coffee table read,or a quick fix book, but a VERY interesting and informative read. A MUST if you are seriously studying canine behaviour!!

Being a dog owner (Basset Hound) for the first time, I have found this book invaluable. It really does give you an insight into the dog's mind and also offers solutions for certain problems such as separation anxiety! A definite must for all dog lovers!

This is a fine detailed study into the anatomical processes that occur within the brain of the dog, both wold and domestic, with referral to pet dogs and their cousins. It explains how nerve impulses react to stimulate and the reaction that then occurs in response, thus leading to certain actions by the dog. This understanding leads to a greater knowledge of why the family canis acts in the way that they do. The book is a little sciencific, but for the amatuer just wishing to appreciate their dog, it is a good read with clear text. Ideal for any students of veterinary science, dog behaviour and training. Highley recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read for the doggy minded
Certainly worth the read, however some of the theory is a little "old-school" so best read in context with other more modern dog behaviour books.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read however could improve
I found this book informative, it's a good read however it's not a light read. I did get the feeling whilst reading it that it was a bit of a "ramble" and very heavy to read. Read more

I found this book disappointing, as I expected it to be light hearted and it was not.
