On holiday on the Greek island of Rhodes for a family wedding writer Della Galton found herself drawn to a stray dog living rough among the rocks on the beach. A closer investigation revealed the animal was scavenging from the holidaymakers to feed her 13 puppies. With the resort about to close for winter, dog lover Della knew she couldn't leave the canine family to starve. And despite threats of divorce from her husband, she enlisted the help of a local animal rescue charity to save them. She and holidaymakers of all nationalities formed a human chain to carry the puppies to safety. Back home in England, Della thought her job was done. But she made the fatal mistake of contacting Rhodes Animal Welfare for an update only to find out that the puppies had been rehomed but Lindy was on death row. With three little words I'll have herA", Della began the task of bringing Lindy back to England to live with her other three dogs. Over the next eight years Lindy proved to be a true survivor, overcoming many life-threatening events, including being swept down the river, falling out of a car travelling at speed, being chased by a stampeding herd of angry cows and surviving a rare form of cancer. The Dog With Nine Lives will tug at the emotions of dog lovers everywhere.
About the Author
Della Galton teaches creative writing and is a popular speaker at writers' conferences across the UK. She is the author of How To Write and Sell Short Stories which is now in its second reprint and has two published novels.

In this very short book which can easily be read in one sitting, Della Galton recounts the story of how she rescued stray dog Lindy and her thirteen puppies from a beach on the Greek island of Rhodes. After getting them all to a nearby animal sanctuary, Della and her husband flew home. It was only a couple of weeks later that Della decided to bring Lindy to England - she was unlikely to be re-homed in Greece and was facing a death sentence.
Della Galton exudes warmth and compassion in her writing, and a little humour here and there. Her passion for animals and especially dogs shines through and I soon fell in love with Lindy and Della's other rescue dogs.
Lindy lived with Della and her family for eight years in all and this book is indeed a celebration of their time together. Lindy faced many hurdles over the years - hence the title of 'The Dog with Nine Lives'. After encounters with herds of cows, cancer and almost drowning amongst others she really did use up nine lives, and who knows how many more she'd used before she met Della?
A wonderful story, beautifully presented with some lovely colour photographs, this will appeal to any animal lover, not just dog lovers. It would make an ideal stocking-filler present.

This is a heart warming story of the rescue of Lindy, a stray wandering on a beach in Greece. A book that will make you smile and cry, sometimes at the same time! Beautifully written with just the right balance of sentimentality and humour, I thoroughly recommend this as an ideal gift for any animal lover.

Wow, this was a brilliant read. I laughed out loud in places. And it was poignant too. I tend to avoid books like this in case they are too sad. But this wasn't. I think it's because the writer has such an easy style. She sort of takes you into the places she's writing about. When Lindy swims after the ducks in the river thinking she could catch them, I fell about laughing. We had a dog that used to do this. Micky. He never caught any either. He also thought he could climb trees and catch squirrels and fly and catch seagulls. He couldn't do any of that either!
