From Library Journal
Owens, founder of Raise with Praise, Inc. and a certified evaluator for the Delta Society's Animal Assisted Therapy Program, has written a good, basic, reasonably priced introduction to dog training based upon rewarding "successive approximations" of correct behavior. Gone are the leash "pop" and harsher corrections of earlier obedience methods. Nonviolent dog training shapes appropriate behavior with rewards such as food and games. Incorrect behavior is punished by ignoring the dog and by verbal cues such as "oh-oh." There are chapters on clicker training, target stick training, and training gear such as collars and leashes; the nine ingredients of canine optimum health (high-quality diet, play, socialization, quiet time, exercise, employment, rest, training, and healthcare); and human-canine communication. How to teach "sit," "stay," "down," "stand," "come," "heel," "take it," and "drop it" are explained step-by-step and illustrated with photographs. From the Author

Here's what the experts are saying about THE DOG WHISPERER:
"This is an important book. Paul Owens offers a powerful voice of nonviolence and a truly enlightened approach to raising and training your dog. I wholeheartedly recommend his message of compassion and joy." Jack Canfield, Co-author, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul & Chicken Soup for the Soul

"This wonderful book will help break the cycle of animal suffering caused by wrong-mindedness and harmful training methods. Paul Owens' nonviolent process will help prevent dogs from developing various behavioral and psychological problems, which can be difficult to treat later in life. It also helps us develop our empathy and understanding, making us more humane-and more human-and thus more deserving of the company of dogs whose virtues we so often fail to live up to." From the Foreword by Dr. Michael W. Fox Senior Scholar, Bioethics, The Humane Society of the United States, Washington, D.C.

"Paul Owens has done dogs and dog lovers a real favor. He has given dog lovers permission to be kind, and as a consequence helped them to become more humane. He has given the dogs the chance to escape the brutal techniques that are so often imposed upon them 'for their own good.' This book provides us with a much needed modern reminder of the value of individual compassion, and shows us that love and learning can be fun and that they don't have to hurt." Karen L. Overall, M.A., V.M.D., PhD Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, ABS Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist

"I enjoyed this book immensely. Paul Owens reveals the mystique of the dog and that unique bond we all strive to share with our precious canine pets. While other trainers snap, crackle and pop, Paul creates an atmosphere of social cooperation. Everyone should enjoy The Dog Whisperer." William E. Campbell, BehavioRx Systems, Author, Behavior Problems in Dogs & Better Behavior in Dogs

"After working for years to expose trainers' cruelty to animals in the production of movies, I applaud a book that encourages the compassion and nonviolence that dogs so richly deserve." Bob Barker, Host, The Price is Right

"How refreshing. Paul Owens offers us a well-thought-out, enjoyable, holistic text, which always has the physical and mental well being of dogs at its heart. And, as an added bonus, The Dog Whisperer has many useful tips to promote the physical and mental well-being of dogs' human companions." Dr. Ian Dunbar, Author, Dog Behavior and founder, Association of Pet Dog Trainers

"The Dog Whisperer delivers a big message. With easy-to-follow lessons Paul Owens guides pet owners in raising cooperative, happy dogs. His techniques involve motivation rather than force. Well done, Paul. Your book leads the way to a better relationship with dogs." Terry Ryan, Author, The Toolbox for Remodeling Problem Behaviors

"This book is a must read for all dog lovers. Paul Owens offers a practical, heart-based approach to dog training filled with joy and love." Allen Schoen, D.V.M., Author, Love, Miracles and Animal Healing

"Lately dog owners have become aware of the superiority of training systems based on kindness rather than harsh corrections. The Dog Whisperer shows them a very effective method that works everywhere, not just in the owner's backyard. It also offers guidance for the owners themselves. This enables the owner to achieve the balance in their own life that allows the deepest bonding with their dogs. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever had problems training their dog and to anyone who wants to learn the best way to train their dog." Nancy Scanlon, D.V.M., Holistic Veterinarian

"Having worked with animals as a professional trainer over many years, I well understand the importance of changing human attitudes. Now, this book has changed my behavior. It has reminded me of many of the things I already knew but had somewhat lost touch with. Simply put, as I continue working with animals, including my own dog, I am having a lot more fun." Mollie Hogan, Executive Director, Wildworks Wild Animals Nature Care Center, Topanga Canyon, California

"Paul's teaching methods adapt to working with schools, veterinarians, pet owners, and animals, creating order out of seemingly uncontrollable situations." Nancy Disbro, D.V.M.

"In the name of countless animals, thank you for your optimism and vision." Brian Forsgren, D.V.M.

I buy a lot of dog books but this one is the BEST, actually I was looking indoors this morning for it because I'm going to give training tips to a puppy class tonight and I want to recommend this book. I first brought this book because I wanted to find non violent tips for training my two German Shepherds, this book was great I still refer to it. Its got tips from basic puppy/dog training right upto problem solving for the more difficult situations.

Very good book. Have refered to it several times with each of my four legged companions. I have 3 dogs now. The last one an abanded female huskey mix. The woman who owned her tossed her out (literately) due to the fact she dug up her garden. She would leave the poor thing alone in the yard for weeks at a time. The puppy is now only 5 months old . With following this book I have won her trust with humans again. She is very eager to please and enjoys life again. Plus this books helps us as pack leaders/trainers to keep things in mind like our breathing, our motivation, and closing the communication gap.

Negative punishment means taking something good away from your dog to get him to stop doing a behavior. If your puppy bites you, for example, you withdraw your attention by walking away. If you ask your dog to sit but he barks instead, you eat the treat that was intended for him. "e;
