Book Description

1 Sep 2008 1858944201 978-1858944203
For more than 5000 years, artists have created an extraordinary array of captivating images of the dog the animal that has enjoyed the closest and most intriguing relationship with man. This beautiful book is lavishly illustrated with works from all over the world, ranging from the earliest African rock paintings to the groundbreaking work of contemporary artists. It explores the various roles the dog has played in both art and society, including its depiction as a symbol of fidelity and romantic love; as a prized possession, vaunting its owner's power and wealth; as a treasured and loyal pet; as a mythological being, mysteriously travelling between the lands of the living and the dead; as a religious image of purity, or dissolution; and as an indispensable working and hunting companion. A vividly written text is accompanied by glorious images, featuring many different breeds, that capture the soulful, beguiling and dynamic character of man s best friend in its diverse incarnations, from protector to predator, dark force to deity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read and coffee table book 7 Oct 2008
By A. Rice
Format:Hardcover
I have just been given this book as a gift, having also been given Pickerel's Horse: 30,000 Years of the Horse in Art, a couple of years ago. I loved the first book and it is with great delight that I can say the Dog book certainly lives up to my expectations. The choice of paintings the author has used is fascinating, from well-known and much reproduced works to ones little heard of, with the overall impression underlining just how important the dog within the arts has been over the centuries. I find myself now scrutinising works of art to see if I can find the almost inevitable dog in them, especially Dutch works of the seventeenth century! Visually this book is wonderful, as was the Horse book, and in a similar way the accompanying text provides a lively and interesting look at the dog, its place in cultures, its development into such varied breeds and its fundamental importance to human. The author raises interesting questions and topics that are thought provoking and as stimulating mentally as the paintings are visually. This is a definitely a book for every dog lover, but is also relevant from a purely art historical angle

5.0 out of 5 stars Best in Show !! 1 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
If you are like me and have searched for ages for the perfect 'Coffee Table' on dogs, then look no further because everything you could ever want is right here. This book is fantastic!!! The Authors attention to detail is amazing and the accompanying text shows both a thorough understanding of art history and a passion for the subject. No expense has been spared or corners cut in the production of this book and it is exactly what you would expect from this great publisher.... A fabulous author, beautiful images, flair, weighty thick paper, OUTSTANDING cover, the list goes on. This book takes you on a fantastic journey that anyone would be sorry to miss. I knew that I would have a house full at Christmas with people of all ages to entertain for 5 days.... I had set up a quiet reading room at the front of the house with books and magazines, to the rear was the TV room where endless DVDs and Sat telly on offer. What happened shocked me because the front room was chocka for the whole week with people piled on the sofas fighting over THIS BOOK!! We were actually glad to see everyone go so that we could sit down and have a proper read ourselves. It might sound a bit ridiculous to say and still I would like to thank Ms Pickeral because this is the first year that there have been no fights at Christmas.... only over the book and they were entertainment value in themselves. I have one last thing to say.... BUY this book and your family/ friends will love you forever. We might cancel the telly next year and place the 'The Horse, 30,000 years...' The Horse: 30,000 Years of the Horse in Artin a second quiet room :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Informative 9 Oct 2008
Format:Hardcover
As with the previous publication from this talented author, 30,000 Year of the Horse in Art, 'The Dog: 5000 Years of the Dog in Art' is an articulate balance between informing the reader and being a sheer delight to delve into. The selection of images used is both original and accessible and any one who loves dog would enjoy having this book to browse through. Definitely on my Christmas present wish list!
