About the Author

Dante Alighieri was born in Florence Italy in 1265. In 1301, a political dispute lead to his exile from Florence. Over the next few years he made his home in Verona, Lucca and other cities. By 1310 he had written Inferno and Purgatorio, the first two books of his Divine Comedy. He wrote the third and concluding book, Paradiso, in the years after he found sanctuary in Ravenna in 1318. An allegorical account of his wanderings in a spiritual wilderness and eventual salvation under the guidance of his beloved Beatrice, The Divine Comedy is recognised as Dante's masterwork and a landmark of world literature. He died in exile in 1321 and was buried in Ravenna.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to my bookshelf. 13 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Now I must admit my reason for purchasing this version of la Divina Commedia was solely because of the alluring charm and ineffable beauty of the cover, and on that note, it did not disappoint. Now this is not to say I have not read the Wordsworth translation, which I have, and it is superb in itself, but I would recommend those new to the Comedy to purchase a cheaper edition of the Wordsworth translation first, or even better, borrow one from a friend or local library. If enjoyed, then purchase this paragon of beauty and keep it unspoiled. For those studying the Comedy however, I would HIGHLY suggest the verse translation of the Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso by Robert & Jean Hollander, for an analytical study of the Comedy, there are no rivals.

The paper quality of the book is first-rate, bar none. The book opens with an Introduction to the Comedy, covering the history of the work and its author, Dante, as well as a short Chronology of the Inferno itself, the cosmology of the Earth and hell, the theology of the Comedy, and a short history of Translation. It is also packed full of delightful illustrations.

An earlier reviewer stated that the Comedy was translated into Old English, to correct this view, it is not. The translation by Wordsworth is into what is considered Modern English.

Everybody who shares my affection for the Comedy should in my opinion, own a copy of this Leather-bound edition by B&N.

If you made it to the end of my review, then thank you most dearly for reading and I wish you all well.

Would you buy a literal translation into Italian of Shakespeare? Well this is at best a pedestrian literal rendition of Dante. Subtlety symbolism and layers of meaning lost in translation. Smack on my wrist for clicking the one click option as it was so cheap and had a five star rating. One star is the minimum allowed, this translation should carry an educational health warning, and does not deserve any stars.
Lasciate ogni speranza voi che leggete.

Format:Hardcover
Very nice copy, the binding is really robust and feels and looks great. The pages edges are gold and there's a gold pagekeeper within, it's all very posh and nice!

Illustrations and layout is great, too.

1.0 out of 5 stars KINDLE Good Book, Bad Translation 10 Jun 2013
By MC
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In the midst of researching Dante for a paper I began to read The Divine Comedy, a book I had heard a lot about. This book is magnificent and it is clear why it has withstood the tests of time. However, this version of the book is very badly translated. Although I suspect it is translated directly from the Italian there is no care taken to make the English version flow smoothly or even form coherent sentences. There appears to be some text missing and the overall layout is ridiculous with lines and large spaces blank for no apparent reason. Save your money and buy a printed copy as there will be more care given and you'll be able to read it without banging your head of a wall from the terrible translation.
