I bought this edition of Dante's Inferno because I'm a new reader and wanted to read it in Italian, in order not to lose any detail regarding rhyme and rhythm, and in English in order not to lose the meaning (I haven't studied Italian ever). In addition, I wanted additional notes to get as much profit as possible of this first reading. My choice couldn't have been better. Notes give the reader much interesting information and comment on interesting insights and different perspectives when reading the text, but are not excessively scholarly, which is the best you can expect as a new reader. Of course, some background on the Greek and Roman classics as well as on the Bible and Catholic tradition is required, but the notes to the text could not be better, in my opinion.
One thing missing, perhaps, is the illustrations by Gustave Doré, which are unique and valuable for their own sake but I think they also help the first reader and would have made of this edition of Dante's Inferno the best ever.
