Book Description

1 May 2008
Dr Sarno traces the roots of mindbody disorders by exploring the interaction between the generally reasonable, rational, ethical and moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind. The failure of medicine's practitioners to recognise and appropriately treat mindbody disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions. "The Divided Mind" outlines the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud's crucial role, and describes the psychology responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. Arguing that knowledge and awareness of psychosomatic phenomena clearly have healing powers, "The Divided Mind" reveals how and why thousands of people have become pain-free simply by following Dr Sarno's revolutionary advice.

... some things about life are so obvious it's ridiculous you never realised them before. I had worsening RSI problems for 2 years before reading, studying and 'becoming a follower' of the principles described by Dr. Sarno. I initially read his other book, 'the mindbody prescription' and as an ex-biochemical scientist and lifelong cynic, it took some further research into what Sarno covered in that book before I was convinced what he suggests is valid.

This book is much more thorough and interesting to read, even if your knowledge of medical science and pathology doesn't let you believe it. It's an illuminating perspective on the connection between mind and body with contributions from numerous doctors and psychologists that would be a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the mind and the body. Hugely recommended for the empirical research documented therein and illuminating case-studies.

I don't bother any more trying to convince other people with mindbody symptoms that they can get better. I just know that now I can use my hands again without pain. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars the pain epidemic 21 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Please read this book if you suffer from shoulder pain or knee pain or any form of tendonitis. It explains how the mind can create pain in the body (pain which can move around)by starving that area of oxygen and causing pain. It does this as a protective device to stop the person experiencing emotional pain. That is a crude summary but accurate. It gave me the courage to face my own difficult emotions and my physical problems have practically disappeared. Brilliant book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading. 3 Nov 2010
This is a serious book that exposes the medical profession's failure to help those suffering from chronic pain, and their refusal to consider the treatment that the author outlines. It offers a proven remedy for those who have tried everything to relieve their distress and failed. A groundbreaking book - highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lower Back Pain explained 3 Nov 2009
I recently read "Who switched off my Brain" by Dr. Caroline Leaf who suggested this book to anyone interested in the connection between brain and pain-emotional and physical.
This is a well researched book ,explaining in layman's terms the link.
If you are suffering from recurring pain, read this ,then give it to your doctor.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Divided Mind 5 Sep 2010
By Viveka
I'm finding this book a very exciting read. I've always felt that our illnesses are coming from the mind and this book by dr John Sarno more than supports this view. it makes absolute sense and is utterly amazing that modern medicine has no time for this concept. I'd highly recommend anyone and everyone to read this book....especially doctors and nurses. We so badly need to bring back some humanity and common sense into our lives and into our health service. If only there were more Dr John Sarnos around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sarno changed my life and my wife's 30 July 2011
Both my wife and I suffered acute and chronic RSI, which then developed into back and neck ache for several months.
The condition was highly debilitating and our lives were becoming increasingly hard. Day after day work became more difficult (as we weren't even able to check our emails without suffering) and opportunities for leisure diminished (as playing sports was out of question and holding a book unthinkable)

It was pure coincidence that we met someone who had read Sarno's book(s), which brought us back to our old lives in a matter of days.

We were the typical "well-meaning" and well-behaved (Still are) young couple who found it too easy to repress their own anger when faced with frustration and pressure.
We found it hard to understand what repressed anger was, as we thought we were mature people who could deal perfectly with the difficulties and pressures of our family and work commitment! Luckily we were open enough to start reflecting on Sarno's words and talking out the frustrations our works had put on us.

For a few days (10) we discussed openly about what was bothering us, the people we would have happily kicked in their faces, and the anger we were feeling so strongly yet so secretly. Day after day, as we accepted our anger we felt better and we were able to go back to our lifestyle. Since then we have only experienced very occasional back pain and dealt with it reflecting on our emotions.

We have read all Sarno's books and firmly believe that we have learnt one of the most important lessons of our lives. One to pass on to everyone.

We highly recommend this (and all his other) book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading 8 April 2009
By GlenH
For anyone struggling with a 'pain syndrome' I strongly recommend this book. Reading Dr Sarno's Healilng Back Pain book not only completely 'cured' my debilitating back pain, but opened my eyes to the reality of psychogenic pain. This book, the Divided Mind, goes into much greater detail and gives you a profound understanding of how, why and what your own mind does in an effort to distract you from things that could possibly cause a pyschological meltdown.
