Book Description

28 Aug 2006
In 1955 Walt Disney presented the world's first theme park. Disneyland opened with just 18 rides and attractions. Today there are eleven Disney parks around the globe. Visitors can spend weeks at a time in these resorts, often staying in one of Disney's own hotel rooms. But in the last fifty years the Disney Imagineers have designed thousands of rides, attractions, hotels, and even entire theme parks that have never been built. Many of these concepts have remained hidden in the company's private archive for decades. until now. The Disneylands That Never Were documents the biggest, best and most outrageous of these abandoned plans. It details everything from Walt Disney's initial ideas for Mickey Mouse Park to his planned ski resort in California. From small developments like The Disney Hotel in New York's Times Square to the huge Port Disney concept, over five decades of dreams are brought to life in The Disneylands That Never Were.

This book is great, I'm a huge fan of Disney and was extremely surprised at what I discovered inside this book. Finnie has found so many secrets and hidden gems of information and crammed them all inside this incredible book. A must read for any true Disney fan, I would recommend to all.

1.0 out of 5 stars An over-priced amateurish mess 20 Sep 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Unlike most book purchases from the internet I hadn't spent any time whatsoever looking at what I would be purchasing with this effort. To be honest, the fact that it was based around some favourite subjects of mine (Disney's Imagineering & in particular attractions that never came to fruition) I genuinely thought that I'd enjoy whatever was put in front of me. I often find that whether it's film, tv or books, if it's a genre or subject that I'm interested in, I always enjoy it to a degree even if others regard it as poor. With this book it was very different.

To begin with this book sells around 13. For that kind of money you can purchase a large number of brilliantly researched & on the whole, official Disney "backstage" books containing a wealth of information including fascinating text coupled with photo's, diagrams & sketches. the second I opened the package containing this book I knew I'd been "ripped off". The cover itself is ridiculously amateur with the graphics & text obviously re-produced on a poor printing machine, the cover wasn't even "straight". A quick flick-through revealed large print text so don't expect a long read for your 200+ pages and most annoying of all - not a single photograph, sketch or diagram. The book is no more than a reasonably well put together A Level project.

The book is split into various chapters covering different parks, hotels, etc & the writer has a mind-numbingly annoying method of setting up the next chapter at the end of each current one. It's bad enough reading that style once or twice but every single chapter ends like it, it quite simply drove me mad. Aside from that, the writing itself is adequate enough, it's the content that's so dissapointing to any fan of the Disney Parks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disney 9 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
I write this having just read Shaun's book but also 3 days before I go to Disneyworld in Florida with my family. We are all excited and cannot wait to arrive at this magical place. We have our Disney Tickets and have even planned where we are going every day of our holiday. I was therefore excited about reading this book, but within 2 chapters I was concerned whether now was the right time to read it. You see, this book captures the Disney Magic too, but a Disney we will never be able to see, experience or touch, as Shaun describes Disney attractions that were never made into reality. I've been to Disney before and know what a brilliant place it is, but Shaun describes an even better world and I was concerned this would spoil my holiday. It won't!!!

I read the remaining chapters in a day, I couldn't put it down. By the time I had finished reading, I understood why the attractions were not built but also why Disney is so magic whatever they give to the public. I also have another reason to go now. To see some of the projects that were slightly altered or changed from their original thinking and to imagine what they would have been like if the original plans had gone ahead.

And my favourite bit just to tantalise you - An old building from a disney film which was part of Walt Disney's original thinking and plans turning up 40 years later as a Hot Dog stand in Disneyland Paris. As Shaun says of Disney - they never throw an idea away, they just wait for the right time and place to implement it!!

Fantastic!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! 19 Sep 2006
Format:Paperback
We stood at the gates to the Magic Kingdom WDW with our chin's on the ground, our first experience of Disney magic outside of books or movies had a profound effect on my family and I.

As the years have passed and our love affair with all things Disney has grown, the questions and curiosity about the 'unseen' depths of the imagineers cupboard, etc. has increased.

Many a time have we said things like, "They should build" or "I wonder if"?

Those questions amongst many others have been answered, curiosities and rumours have been met with fact, The Disneylands That Never Were has it all and more.

An obviously well researched and planned book, written by a man who's passion for Disney shines through with every fascinating page.

Interesting and informative, factual but fun, Shaun takes you on a journey through the vast land of ideas and plan's, past, present and future.

More to come? We hope so!

Never underestimate the magic of believing.
