Fun, Sun and Romance 20 May 2009
By Trish23
Format:Paperback
If you like Sophie Kinsella and Jenny Colgan or just like your romance with a big helping of comedy then this laugh out loud holiday read is for you. You won't be disapointed.
Kate , the heroine, is trying to convince herself that revolting boyfriend Brian is Mr Right. Kates larger-than-life family of well meaning busybodies know he's Mr Wrong and are doing all in their power to encourage a break up. When Will - family friend and unrequited love of Kates life - whisks her off to Tuscany to cook for incorrible rock band Walking Wounded chaos, romance, high comedy and low farce ensue.
This book is populated with a great cast of characters who are hilarious and entertaining. As well as Kates family, there's the hideous Z-list celebrity, the self satisfied purveyor of new age hokum and Freddie, Kates gay flatmate who is quite simply the funniest and most endearing supporting character I have ever come across in rom/com. The members of Walking Wounded also provide some great comedy moments.
The Disengagement Ring revels in everything that makes life enjoyable - romance, friendship, family, food (don't read it if you're hungry)and the simple joys of heat and sunshine - even Ireland is unfeasably sunny.
The romance develops slowly and is all the more believable for that and in it's serious moments the book is quite moving particularly in one stand out scene where an older character reflects on the collateral damage he has left behind in his pursuit of personal fulfillment.

If you have a hot date with a beach bed or want to be sure you have a good read for the 10 hour delay at the airport before you get to it pack this in your hand luggage and enjoy.

If you're looking for a 21st century Jane Austen, check out Clodagh Murphy's The Disengagement Ring. I found the book's heroine, Kate, smart, funny and vulnerable. She's found love with a gorgeous man but her great unrequited love is Will, a sexy band manager. His rock band is like a cross between Kings of Leon and White Stripes. I really loved how Kate's crazy mother Grace was as badly behaved as the rock stars.

This book joins the recent wave of great Irish chic lit so if you like Marian Keyes or Cecelia Ahern, you'll love it. We need more feel good books like this. I was so wrapped up in Kate's love triangle, I kept missing my tube stop in the morning!

A lovely first novel from Clodagh Murphy ... the characters are well thought out and easy to relate to ... I read a lot of chick lit and The Disengagement Ring is one of the best I've read in a very long time - highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyable - and romantic
I must start by saying that I don't usually read 'chick lit' (which is a horrible term anyway) - my preferred genre is crime/mystery - with a bit of fantasy thrown in. Read more
