Disease care vs health care: which would you choose?

Contrary to conventional wisdom, chronic disease is not genetically predetermined but results from a mismatch between our genes and environment and lifestyle. What we call a "disease" is the outcome of an imbalance in one or more of the seven core physiological processes. Leveraging a lifetime on the cutting edge of research and practice, Dr. Jeffrey S. Bland lays out a road map for good health by helping us understand these processes and the root causes of chronic illness. As Bland teaches us, no two people have the identical form of any disease, so with the right personalized program, we can safely and effectively manage and ultimately cure what ails us.

In the twenty-first century, medicine is undergoing a paradigm shift comparable to the advances in infectious disease in the late nineteenth century. While these strides have nearly doubled life expectancies in only four generations, quality of life has yet to rise to its full potential. Treatment of chronic diseases—diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, dementia, and many others—is responsible for 78 percent of total health care costs in the United States, yet we're managing the symptoms of these illnesses with pills and temporary remedies instead of identifying, preventing, and addressing their underlying causes. In The Disease Delusion, we learn how we may fundamentally change our perceptions of illness and approach a cure.

Dr. Bland has greatly influenced many of the biggest names in medicine today, but until now we have not had access to the larger framework in which to understand chronic illness or ways to foster lifelong health. Complete with self-evaluation questionnaires and sample meal plans, and supported by the most recent advances in health science, The Disease Delusion is indispensable to anyone determined to live long and well.

Includes 8 interactive health assessments you can complete on your phone

Great detail on how the bodies systems work and how to effect changes in health and wellbeing using food, exercise and the environment. I found the consistent emphasis on avoiding saturated fats without any content about good fats versus bad fats a big omission and misleading. I also found the meal plans at the back too US orientated so wouldn't take that part seriously. On the whole though well worth reading but prefer the paleo books when it comes to diet approaches.

I love everything about this book. It should be read by everyone interested in how the body works and why it gets sick, not just nutritional therapists like me, as it explains why so many people are suffering from chronic disease and how the medical profession views these diseases as separate entities rather than all stemming from a few imbalances in the body. Dr Bland is known as the 'father of functional medicine', the new way of doing medicine that focuses on personal prevention and treatment of chronic diseases by correcting the imbalances in one or more of the 7 core physiological processes in the body, namely assimilation and elimination, detoxification, defense, cellular communications, cellular transport, energy and structure. By modifying your environment, lifestyle, diet and genetic expression you can affect these processes. There are questionnaires about each process to help you identify any imbalances in your own body and It is written in an easy style that makes for compulsive reading and I am sure that nobody could fail to be enthralled at just how powerful our food is - the wrong food wreaking havoc and the right food optimising health - as well as the mismatch between our genes and our environment and lifestyle.

If you haven't heard of him, Jeff Bland is one of the great medical pioneers of our time.

Our current medical model is failing to curb the chronic disease epidemic - just look around you; heart disease, type 2 diabetes, autoimmunity, chronic pain, fatigue, depression, dementia, and obesity are all wide-spread and increasingly burdensome problems.

All this could change fast if we take heed of Jeff's call for a new type of health care, which, rather than being caught up with the old model of naming an illness with a diagnosis and prescribing the corresponding synthetic drugs or surgery, actually addresses the reasons why people are sick and changes them.

This book is a synthesis of decades of Jeff's pioneering work, work that is now influencing medical education, doctors, and thought leaders all over the world. It offers a new and exciting vision for a better healthcare system, a vision that is starting to be realized.

On a more practical level, this book gives you the insight and guidance you need to unlock your health potential.

Buy it, and buy another copy for your doctor.

So much information, well researched and easy to follow. It's not that we don't already know that we need to eat better and exercise more, but it's very useful to know how many symptoms are associated with not doing this well and how to improve health. For anyone with a chronic illness it's essential reading, if we all put this into practice there may be no need to go to the doctor again.

An eye-opener that everyone needs to read to understand how their lifestyle, diet and the environment around them affects their health. It shows that we do not have to just accept the inevitability of the various chronic diseases of old age.

As a result of reading this book I have completely changed the way I live my life and what I eat.

As always Jeff Bland writes a superb book in the disease delusion. Jeff is the king of functional medicine and a most wonderful speaker. His book demonstrates the paridigm shift in healthcare that has to occur if we are to remain less vertically challenged,

Brilliant and very informative. Opens your eyes to the truth, and makes me question my doctor as he tries to pass on dangerous medication.

Fascinating and informative in equal measures. I find it a really effective way to learn about the body systems and how they can be compromised - especially useful for my Health Kinesiology training which takes a similar approach - treating the whole person and each symptom.Dr Bland refers to the influence of eastern medicine in his book and it is easy to see that the approach of balancing the whole body in the search for wellness is a big change from western medicine that prescribes symptom by symptom til we are all rattling like pill boxes in later life. Hopefully a way forward alongside complementary therapies, a better diet and some western interventions towards a healthier older age.
