Product Description

Product Description

Vivant Denon was known as 'Napoleon's eye'. He was Bonaparte's adviser on artistic matters, accompanying him to Egypt where he witnessed the battle of the Nile and travelled in Upper and Lower Egypt. He was, in effect, the first war artist, always by Bonaparte's side, or that of his generals, feverishly recording the events unfolding before him. He sketched the monuments and temples and observed the customs and manners of the people of Egypt, writing with insight and humanity. Denon presented to Europe the first true and honest image of ancient Egypt and its civilisation. Terence M. Russell tells the story of Vivant Denon's travels in Egypt, using his extraordinary "Journeys in Upper and Lower Egypt", published in 1802, as the basis for a vivid and moving account of the discovery of ancient Egypt. The scientific party that accompanied Napoleon on his Egyptian campaign accomplished an extraordinary thing: they brought back to Europe a rich, mature civilisation which no one had hitherto suspected existed.

Great Read! 6 May 2006
Format:Hardcover
This book is fascinating. Denon was an amazing character. Although in his 50s he travelled tirelessly with Napoleon's army, seeking every opportunity to go on a sortie which would take him to see new things. Through his diary and engravings he compiled an account of Napoleon's discovery of a hitherto undiscovered civilization. This book also gives an insight into life within Napoleon's army. It is superbly illustrated with a treasure trove of Denon's orginal engravings. I would highly recommend this, not only for those with an interest in Egypt, but for anyone with an interest in military or social history.

An inspiring read 28 Nov 2005
Format:Hardcover
This book is an incredible tale. Through it we 'discover' Egypt as Napoleon's army found it. Denon recorded what they found in his diary and beautiful engravings, many of which are reproduced in Terence Russell's book. This book capture's Denon's enthusiasm and his frustrations. More than once he nearly gets left behind as the army moves on and he desperately tries to make just one more record of the monument which has captured his interest. Denon had an eye for everything - architecture, local customs, music, medicine, flora & fauna - but he also recounts moving tales of the people he met. For anyone with any interest in Egypt this book is a 'must'.
