Product Description

Review

"[T]he most comprehensive interdisciplinary one-volume set of readings on discourse that is available today. Jaworski and Coupland have succeeded in combining their broad coverage with a clear focus on the social nature of discourse."-Jef Verschueren, International Pragmatics Association "'Finally we have it. This book belongs on the shelf of everyone with an interest in discourse from beginning student to seasoned researcher.' Ron Scollon, Georgetown University, USA."

About the Author

Both Adam Jaworski and Nikolas Coupland are based at the University of Wales, Cardiff in the Centre for Language and Communication within the School of English Studies. Nik Coupland is Head of department, co-founded and co-edits Blackwells Journal of Sociolinguistics, and Adam is the reviews editor. The Discourse Reader follows on from and complements their co-edited Sociolinguistics Reader which was published in 1997 by Macmillan and is selling extremely well and has been widely adopted.

The book is comfortable to use and read and the selection of texts is excellent. I was recommended it by my university lecturers and it definitely helps as a starting point and/or as support material when taking a course. The only downside is that some of the texts are non-continuous extracts so if you are not already familiar with the arguments exposed by the authors, you will probably need to refer to the original (complete) versions. But then I guess that's the point of a Reader.

This is a collection of some of the most important writings in this field of study. As a new subject, this book charts some of the early developments and later applications, but the subject is still in its infancy. Discourse theory is however starting to open up new avenues of thought for analysts of ideology, dominance and the communicative process. This would be great for English language students at college/uni level.

Excellent 23 Dec. 2008
By Adriana E. Podestá - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
To those who are involved in discourse studies, the book gives a comprehensive view of the different disciplines that deal with discourse, through the works of very well known authors. Readers will learn how to approach discourse by putting different theories into action. It is important to note that not only verbal language but also sounds and images have been the objects of study included in this book, since they also convey meaning. The title itself is significant. The reader feels he is being addressed by the title, that the book is meant for him, and it is!
I highly recommend this book to those who have started discourse studies and to those who are already engaged in them.
