Review

‘Well written and superbly plotted’
Closer

'Great characterisation and natural sounding dialogue, the pace seems to bound along nicely, and there's a good thread of humour tinged with world-weary cynicism.'
Authonomy, reader review

'I loved the gritty realism and the characters. The pacing is spot on too.'
Authonomy, reader review

'Do not normally read crime novels, but the opening caught my eye. Anxious to read more…'

Product Description

DI Brook thought the nightmare was over- but the Reaper has left behind a horrifying legacy…

A nail-shredding thriller for fans of Stuart MacBride and Thomas Harris.

When an accidental drowning is found to be murder, Brook’s past relationship with the victim makes him the prime suspect. A fact made worse when he receives a chilling message urging him to continue the work of the serial killer The Reaper, the deranged vigilante who had previously terrorised the UK.

When a copycat murder on a Derby estate surfaces shortly afterwards, Brook is left with no alternative but to reopen the case- and to find a serial killer he knows is already dead.

But as Brook delves deeper, he unearths the secrets behind a series of savage murders stretching back to 1975. Terrifyingly, it seems that The Reaper’s influence has inspired a new band of willing disciples…

A nail-shredding thriller for fans of Stuart MacBride and Thomas Harris.

I was pleased to encounter a follow-up to The Reaper, a piece of crime fiction I'd thoroughly enjoyed - (rarely the case:the vast majority are disappointing, whatever the hype) - but I was still slightly wary. Maybe The Reaper had been a one-off, and what came next would be as formulaic and dreary as most of the other offerings on the crime fiction shelves. Thankfully, there was no need for such concerns. But there is every reason to read this if you had been intrigued by DI Brook et al the first time around. The sense of 'place' is exactly right, so as a reader you can relax immediately, and prepare for the plot to unfold, which, at a well-judged pace, it very convincingly does. DI Brook's character is further developed, and he continues to be more interesting than many fictional detectives whose personal baggage and neuroses makes me yawn. The Disciple was a great read, and I'm looking forward to your next, Mr. Dunne!

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I would not say it is essential you read The Reaper, the first in the planned trilogy , in order to fully enjoy The Disciple , the second of the series but I would say it is preferable. I hadn't read The Reaper and often found myself, while reading this book, wishing I had because the events of the first book are alluded to so often and I felt the empirical knowledge gleaned from reading the first book would have put more flesh on the bones of the characters and plot for The Disciple.
In which DI Brook finds out that the vigilante who had been murdering victims who he perceived to be menace to society and who he also considered dead is back and once again handing out his extreme brand of justice. But are these killings carried out by the original reaper , unlikely though that may be , or are they work of an extremely dedicated copycat? And can Brooks circumnavigate his way round the force politics while under suspicion of murder himself?
Disciple is a satisfyingly twisty thriller with a multiple plot strand traversing time and the Atlantic ocean . However it somehow lacks tension and dynamism. Comparing this book to Thomas Harris does it no favours as it is a pale imitation of his genre topping works. The idea of a murderer carrying out meticulously planned grotesquely staged slayings of , the anti-social pond life we all see everyday is not explored fully , other than to mention that the general public support it .This could have been covered in more depth and some of the more ephemeral tedious character interplay jettisoned .
Disciple is a decent thriller , but perhaps a more implicit understanding of the back story might have helped this reader enjoy it a little more. Not that I didn't enjoy to some extent , just not as much as I thought I would. Stephen Dunne is undoubtedly capable of writing a great thriller. The Disciple is not it though.

Read The Reaper and The Disciple where's the next one, please hurry before DI Brook gets much older. I've read alot of crime novels and this author is one of the best, I just wish he'd write quicker maybe if he didn't discribe places so much like Mac the doormans home in The Reaper (who cares)we would have the next book by now. Come on Steven I am not getting any younger.

Should be a no stars option for cliche-ridden nonsense.
How disappointing. I saved this book for a weekend when I knew I'd have some reading time. I binned it after giving it a fair chance- first 50 pages. Cliches on every page. Read more
