Product Description

In a universe where humans and aliens have formed a loose government called the Earth Alliance, treaties guarantee that humans are subject to alien laws when on alien soil. But alien laws often make no sense, and the punishments vary from loss of life to loss of a first-born child.

Now three cases have collided: a stolen spaceyacht filled with dead bodies, two kidnapped human children, and a human woman on the run, trying to Disappear to avoid alien prosecution. Flint must enforce the law-giving the children to aliens, solving the murders, and arresting the woman for trying to save her own life. But how is a man supposed to enforce laws that are unjust? How can he sacrifice innocents to a system he's not sure he believes in? How can Miles Flint do the right thing in a universe where the right thing is very, very wrong?

This Endeavor Award-winning novel is Flint's first adventure, the story that turns him from a police detective in the Armstrong Dome on the Moon into a Retrieval Artist.

"Rusch has created an entertaining blend
of mystery and sf, a solid police drama that asks
hard questions about what justice between cultures, and even species, really is."
-Booklist

"It feels like a popular TV series crossed with a
Spielberg film-engaging."
-Locus

"The Disappeared is a very readable, very thought-provoking novel that lives up to every expectation we have of Rusch and her considerable talents. Buy and enjoy."

Over the years, I have read a lot of short fiction by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and always enjoyed it, so picking up a longer work was overdue. The Disappeared: A Retrieval Artist Novel was a good choice.
Other than to criticize it for not being exceptional (and why would I do a stupid thing like that?), this is a flawless novel, a very good introduction to the eleven book (so far) 'Retrieval Artist'-series - which apparently can be read in any order, though this is clearly the first - and I can highly recommend it.
The story takes place almost exclusively inside one of the domes on the moon, centres around two detectives and is essentially about the relationship between humans and three alien races - and it's these aliens where Rusch excels: The are not you usual blue-skinned humans with tentacles, but the behaviour of the Disty, the Wygnin and the Rev and their customs are really alien.
More would be telling. Read it.

A first class science fiction thriller. Dangerous aliens, complex characters, a detailed and authentic background and a brilliantly satisfying resolution to a complex problem. So all the right ingredients, put together with style and pace!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique premise and great world 5 Jan 2014
By Susan - Published on Amazon.com
Great story about a detective who looks for people in reverse, so to speak. The detective is human and easy to identify with. You hate to put it down. I've read most of the rest of the series and while each book has its own pros and cons, they are great as a whole. I only give it 4 stars, as 5 would be perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this intriguing Sci-Fi / Mystery Novel! 17 Nov 2013
By Vanessa Grant - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Wow! Rusch is a skilled, highly-readable author who is an expert in bringing characters to life on the page (eScreen?). Immediately, I was entangled in the dilemna of a woman about to Disappear from a life she loved, and the tragedy of a couple whose baby was mysteriously stolen.

I needed to discover the reason for the woman’s disappearance, the fate of the baby. I was fascinated by the world Rusch created, and the moral dilemma of good people wrestling with right and wrong in a world where the law allowed children to be stolen from their parents, where humans could unwittingly cross a line that doomed them to devastating legal consequences meted out under multi-species legal agreements.

Rusch paired a burned-out investigator with a brilliant rookie detective whose personal tragedy forces him to examine everything he believes. The author has created a masterpiece!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read 30 Oct 2013

This book explores the issues humans may face after "First Contact." In a universe of the future, humans and aliens co-exist on many planets. This book challenges readers to consider what will happen when cultures, and laws, collide. Must humans respect the laws of their alien counterparts, even if the laws are an anathema to human sensibilities?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mystery set in a fascinating and believable future. 21 Mar 2013

I loved this book and have continued reading the books in order through the series. I hope they never end. The author has created a vision of a future where humans have built cities on the moon and interacts with a bizarre assortment of aliens, but it all seems reasonable and possible and believable. I love the characters and the mysteries and surprises at every turn!

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting start to a very good series 7 Jan 2013
By Gordon Leacock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the first book in the Retrieval Artist series. One aspect of the book I enjoyed was that it featured much more character development that many SF novels. That continues in the rest of the series.

I'd call this is must read for most SF fans.
