Review

'The second book by M. R. Hall, whose debut crime novel, The Coroner, made the bestseller list last year, does not disappoint... an excellent and compelling detective drama' --Daily Mail

'The Disappeared is a substantial and satisfying novel which adroitly combines the personal and the political into an engrossing narrative that is ultimately about international paranoia.'
--Daily Express

`Hall's second novel featuring district coroner Jenny Cooper is even more satisfying and ambitious than her first, as Cooper tries to solve the disappearance of two British students.'
--Heat magazine

`Hall overcomes the literary equivalent of "second album syndrome" with aplomb, showing a coroner is just as able to become a detective - and, in this case, advance into the world of Spooks - as the forensic pathologists of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs.'
--The Sunday Times

Product Description

Two young British students, Nazim Jamal and Rafi Hassan vanish without a trace. The police tell their parents that the boys had been under surveillance, that it was likely they left the country to pursue their dangerous new ideals. Seven years later, Nazim’s grief-stricken mother is still unconvinced. Jenny Cooper is her last hope. Jenny is finally beginning to settle into her role as Coroner for the Severn Valley; the ghosts of her past that threatened to topple her, banished to the sidelines once more. But as the inquest into Nazim's disappearance gets underway, the stink of corruption and conspiracy becomes clear . . . As the pressure from above increases, a code of silence is imposed on the inquest and events begin to spiral out of all control, pushing Jenny to breaking point. For how could she have known that by unravelling the mysteries of the disappeared, she would begin to unearth her own buried secrets?

Excellent 13 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the second installment of M.R. Hall's 'Jenny Cooper Series'. If you read the last novel, The Coronor, then you know already what a cracking read you are in for. This story is all about a young British student Nazim Jamal, who disappeared along with another student seven years earlier. Mrs Jamal, the mother of Nazim, wants an inquest to be held into the circumstances surrounding her son's 'presumed' death, as she does not believe the police when they say the students were under surveillance and left the country to train with other extremists.

I am a voracious reader and am always reading, and I have to say that this is one of the very few novels that have actually left me stunned. A couple of incidents I did not see coming and was shocked when I read them, it certainly made me want to continue to read more of M. R. Hall's novels and to know that I could not second-guess what was coming next.

In my view a cracking read.

I loved The Coroner, I loved The Disappeared and I can't wait to get my hands on The Redeemed. This is an addictive series of books already, tailor-made for television.

I read the first one in this series - The Coroner (Jenny Cooper 1) - when it was first published and found it gripping reading. This second book is equally enthralling. Jenny Cooper, Coroner, is asked to look into the disappearance, and possible death of a young Asian student. His grieving mother fears he is dead but hopes he is still alive. Jenny, because she is a Coroner, can only investigate a death. When she starts to make tentative enquiries she finds many obstacles put in her way and many people suggest she should leave well alone as there are things she does not understand.

But Jenny is obstinate and opposition is likely to make her more determined to investigate the disappearance of the young man and his friend. She has her own demons to conquer as well with her anxiety and panic attacks which are never far from the surface in spite of her medication. This is the aspect of the book which I find slightly irritating and it is the reason why I have given it four stars rather than five.

The writing is good and the tension is maintained throughout. There are many interesting characters and sub plots but I find the main character's mental state detracts from, instead of heightening the tension. It is clear there is something which is causing her mental problems and I really want to know what it is but it is always hinted at and never revealed - at least so far. Others may find this aspect of the story adds to the tension but as I say I don't find it does so. I shall be reading the third book in the series as I enjoy the plots and the insight into a Coroner's work is fascinating. The third book is The Redeemed (Jenny Cooper 3)

Getting Better
Hall has improved enormously since his first book. He is persisting, unfortunately, in making his coroner do all sorts of things that no coroner would ever do. Read more

Crime Originsl
I have loved this series. He's created a true original character in Jenny, she's flawed and prickly but brilliant. Much recommended for any crime thriller fans.

The Disappeared
I had read the first book The Coroner, which I enjoyed immensely. The second book wasn't quite as punchy as the first, although it did make good reading. Read more
