Review

The indispensable guide for the Dingle Way ... 64 water-resistant pages in a ring binder, with color photos and good maps. --Washington Times Special 22 July 2006

Very useful guide with excellent, clear directions (in big enough type to read without my reading glasses!). Clear maps, though numbers on the contour lines and grid references are missing, so the nerd part of my character was occasionally frustrated. Interesting background info about the fauna and flora, plus history makes it more than just maps with instructions. Fold out format of maps on strong card withstood gale force winds! Good value for money. --Stephen Lustig, London

Product Description

The Dingle Way runs 111 miles (179 km) around the beautiful Dingle Peninsula. It starts and finishes in Tralee, accessible by train or bus from Dublin and from Kerry Airport. The complete walk takes eight days, but it can easily be shortened. The Dingle Way follows country lanes, quiet roads and cliff-top paths, punctuated by long stretches of glorious beach walking. It offers spectacular seascapes and mountain views. The peninsula is rich in wildlife, archaeology and charming Irish pubs. This guidebook was fully revised in spring 2009 for many route alterations and additional Gaelic place names. It contains all you need to plan and enjoy your holiday on the Dingle Way: the Way in sections, with summaries of distance, terrain and where to find food and drink; concise background on pre-history, heritage and wildlife; information about climbing Mount Eagle and Mount Brandon; a special feature on the Blasket Islands; planning information for travel by car, train, bus or plane; drop-down map of the Dingle Way in four panels (1:115,000); in full colour, with 70 photographs; and, on waterproof paper throughout.

First, a declaration of interest: I am the publisher of this book and am posting a review to reduce confusion. This page is about the second edition (2009) of our 2004 original The Dingle Way (Rucksack Readers) and it contains many route updates, lots of new photographs and new material on Gaelic place names.

Ant from Denmark has posted a wholly favourable review, and we agree with everything he says! But by giving the book only 3 stars he may mislead people into thinking he didn't like it. There is no other guidebook available to this route and this one has very favourable reviews elsewhere.

Finally, we are very environment-conscious, and although all our books are waterproof, Ant's mention of "a practical plastic jacket" just isn't true. We would never use plastic in a product which will may have a new editions in the future if the route changes again. Our paper is treated to be showerproof and our cover (which has the dropdown map flap) has a matt laminate on both sides, so the whole thing is waterproof but can be recycled.

An excellently presented and formatted guide to a spectacular area. Easy to follow, and some lovely photographs. And excellent value. As a walk, the Dingle Way may disappoint some seasoned hikers because a large % of it is on roads (albeit mainly very quiet roads, especially outside of July and August)and beaches, and some of the mountain stretches can be very boggy. But no disappointment in the scenery which is beautiful. Even if you are just touring the Dingle Peninsula by car and only taking the occasional walk, I would still strongly recommend this book as a very informative guide to the history and culture of the area.

Very handy little book for Ireland 9 April 2011

This is a very cool book with a good spiral binding that allows you to flip through the pages as you make the hike. It briefly describes what you see along the hike at each part, a brief historical significance, and detailed description on how to continue following the trail. Although check other reviewers who have used it because there was one review that said at one point it's not well marked. This was gift for friends who are going to the Dingle Peninsula and they didn't even know about this walk and were thrilled to get the book. Great idea.
