Product Description

Product Description

In her diaries Lady Anne Clifford, the remarkable Stuart noblewoman, vividly documents both the great and the trivial events of her long life. They cover her life from her childhood days, when she witnessed the funeral of Queen Elizabeth I, to her last months, when she recalled her past life from her room in Brougham Castle. Through compiling and transcribing the manuscript records, D.J.H. Clifford here presents in one volume the full range of Lady Anne's life, from her active life at court as the Countess of Dorset (residing at Knole in Kent), her turbulent second marriage to the 4th Earl of Pembroke at Wilton in Wiltshire, and her final, long-disputed succession to her father's lands in Westmorland and North Yorkshire. The diaries are complemented by explanatory notes, family trees and illustrations. They provide both a historical record and a glimpse into the life and character of this noble and Christian lady, whose powerful presence is still in evidence today in the monuments and folklore of Westmorland.

About the Author

D.J.H. Clifford is a direct descendant of Lady Anne Clifford, and this book was written as a result of his research into his family's history.

Lady Anne Clifford. 17 Aug 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
This book is excellent and an invaluable resource for anyone studying the life and times of Lady Anne. It has been thoroughly researched by D.J.H Clifford who is passionate about the history of the Clifford family. Numerous quotes from Lady anne's diary have been reproduced as well as the notes Lady Anne made in the margins of her diary. The one disadvantage for anyone who is studying for a post-graduate research degree and needs to know from where the original sources are from, and which manuscripts they have been taken from will find the book a little disappointing. However, the author has included a comprehensive bibliographical list of the manuscripts and other sources at the back of the book.

Lady Anne Clifford biography review 3 Mar 2009
By C. Tuttle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What a treat this book was! It is a remarkable story of a woman who showed unusual determination and courage in protecting her inheritance and personal rights through 2 marriages and into her 80s as an independent landowner and force in her communities. It is an easy read, and provides a first-hand view of life in the late Elizabeth I, early James I eras.

All too overlooked 10 May 2010
By Meg Massey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It is a shame that the story of Lady Anne Clifford is not told more often! I had my first encounter with this text in my first year of graduate school. This it the amazing tale of Lady Anne Clifford, a seventeenth century woman who fought for the right to her inheritance in a time when only men were permitted to own land. Not only does this text provide an insightful glimpse into the life of a woman of this age, but it also provides humorous and courageous encounters with some of the most powerful men of her time, most notably King James I of England. It also demonstrates the power of journal writing. In writing about her life, she provides historical documentation of her right to her father's lands and wealth. Brilliant!
