Product Description

Bronny, a young Australian, finds herself down and out in London. She's a sweet girl who has spent her teenage years in a fearful, cautious bubble. She's never taken drugs, had sex or killed anyone. Within six weeks she's done all three. A group of backpackers break into an abandoned London townhouse seeking a rent-free life of debauchery. They don't realise someone's already there: a terrified woman bound and gagged in the basement. "The Devil's Staircase" combines a chick-lit voice and a dark crime noir environment. Not for the faint-hearted, "The Devil's Staircase" is funny, sexy and disturbing - it will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Format:Hardcover
The Devil's Staircase is like two books in one - the tale of hedonistic Bronnie, who flees across the world to try to escape her demons, and the brutalised Celia, held captive & paralysed only inches from home - and, literally, inches beneath Bronnie's feet. FitzGerald's skill is how she cleverly combines these two journeys into one adrenaline-filled ride, racking up the tension while still making us care. The scenes below stairs are not for the faint-hearted, but truly, it is both wonem, not just Celia, who are living out their nightmares. Fast, funny and genuinely frightening, the Devil's Staircase goes down into the dark places that lurk under innocent facades.

Another great read 9 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
I've waited a while for Helen Fitzgerald's second novel because I enjoyed her first ("Dead Lovely") so much. I've not been disappointed - "The Devil's Staircase" is just as "unputdownable". It's dark, brilliantly written and full of suspense. I don't trust Helen not to lead me into a false sense of security and then turn my expectations on their head and shock me. She does it and she does it well. My 13 year old son also read the book - he started in the morning and finished at night. A book with broad appeal...maybe not for squeamish cat lovers, though!

Dark and Disturbing 18 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
When Bronny escapes Australia three weeks after her eighteenth birthday, it's because she doesn't want to find out whether she has the disease which killed her mother. So she decides to go to London and do some living. Living consists of cleaning the hair out of the drains in a female sauna and steam rooms, living in a squat, taking loads of drugs, trying to lose her virginity, and worrying about the noises coming from the basement. Less overtly humourous and with a darker feel than most of her other books, this one is a fast and furious read with plenty of heart-stopping moments and twists and turns.
