If you like your horror tongue-in-cheek, graphic and (in this edition) uncut then this is for you. "Dr.Phibes" director Robert Fuest's cult classic from 1975 features Ernest Borgnine and William Shatner as an Arch-Satanist and embattled adversary respectively. The plot revolves around an ancient book of Satanic Magic, the souls of people trapped inside a bottle and is flavoured with authentic Satanic ingredients (courtesy of Anton Szandor LaVey: founder of the Church of Satan). The chanting of the Satanic Congregation and the Invocation to Satan uttered by Corbis (Borgnine) are actual utterances employed in LaVey Satanic Rituals in the Church of Satan. The Satanists in the film are heard to speak the ancient, Magical tongue of Enochian: a genuinely powerful language which produces real, unambiguous and quantifiable results. Both LaVey and wife Dianne have cameo roles in the film, which some reviewers have firmly filed under "Worst Film Ever Seen". This is grossly unfair and undeserved in my opinion: Shatner and Borgnine are great, and the special effects are remarkable given that (in 1975) special effects did not really exist. The ending is also extremely impressive and unsettling. As I have said in my review of the single DVD edition, if one considers some of the cinematic horror offerings that have been churned out since this film was made (and which have somehow been hailed as "classics") then "The Devil's Rain" assumes the status of High Art. The second disc in this double-DVD Import is filled entirely with Startrek extras, including trailers for every episode of the four-season first series, and an intimate retrospective conversation between Leonard Nimoy and Bill Shatner, in which the pair discuss everything from acting in Startrek to acting in Startrek.
