Product Description

After finishing The Virgin Spring in 1960 Ingmar Bergman found himself drained and according to a friend needed to tell a joke . The resulting film was The Devil's Eye starring Bibi Andersson, who would later go on to star in both Wild Strawberries and Persona. When the Devil decides that a young woman has been a virgin for too long he sends Don Juan up from hell to rob her of her virginity. Despite his charms the young woman resists the temptation to give in to him, but events become further complicated when Don Juan falls for her, experiencing love for the first time. Previously unavailable on DVD, The Devil's Eye is one of Bergman s most abstract films and represents his first attempt to grapple with the question of theatricality in film. Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: Swedish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Production Notes, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Acceding to the literal interpretation of the folk-saying "A virgin is a sty in the devil's eye," Satan employs a reincarnated Don Juan (Jarl Kulle) to seduce Britt-Marie, the young daughter (Bibi Andersson) of a country parson. Poor Don Juan falls in love with the girl, however, while his servant Pablo (Sture Lagerwall) attempts to do the same with her mother. One of Bergman's few direct comedies (he even reassures viewers of the fact in a note titled "Dear Frightened Audience"), Devil's Eye also harks back to his stage experience by appearing in separate acts--with introductions by Gunnar Bjornstrand. The film is available in two video versions: subtitled and dubbed. ...The Devil's Eye ( Djävulens öga )

Minor Masterpiece 25 April 2010
By Kurt - Published on Amazon.com
Here is Bergman at the peak of his powers creating a richly witty, dark comedy, filled with striking, beautifully played scenes, some tension (will the devil win? in Bergman's universe there is no foregone conclusion), and a good deal of wisdom about the human condition -- withal, an engaging, satisfying story, delivered in a brisk 87 minutes.

Bergman was a great artist; this is not one of his great works; it is a minor but delightful one. But minor work or not, watching the assured writing, cinematography and acting, you know you are in the hands of a master.
