The synopsis of this film is cringingly clichéd, and it's easy to write off a film about an incident in an old abandoned mental hospital, that years later sees a handful of folk returning to document the incident, which includes a clutzy cameraman, old doctor, and sexy PA's and Intern, and the original survivor who had since been institutionalised himself. However this is actually a pretty good British horror, and of late there have been a few - The Hole, Dog Soldiers, Shrooms etc.

Former Hollyoaks hottie Elize Du Toit is great as the sexy intern, even though the comedy-element to the Matt Berry's character is awful, and the sexy PA is not the best actress that the world has ever seen. Andrew Howard is good as the lead guy, even if he comes straight out of the Jason Stratham acting school in his Transporter/Crank characters, with his voice being an English/American loud whisper, his expressionless frown, and his shaved head - don't get me wrong I think that `our Jase' is great, but this seemed like Andrew was his understudy.

The great things about the movie are the location, the way that the main character narrates comments whilst the movie pauses, the tension generated with superb cinematography, and of course having two songs by The Crimea in the first 10 minutes is always a bonus too.

The downside is that the movie gets a little too complicated for it's own good, the twist seemed a bit obvious from the start, and whilst we do deal with LSD trips, the evil characters could only have been drug-enduced!

Director Adam Mason, along with Simon Boyes directed the brilliant film `Broken', that was low budget and high tension, and all in all better than this. By the director's own admission, they started with the idea for this movie, were given a budget with such a tight deadline (10-14 days) that they rushed, and re-wrote coming up with different scenarios daily, and seemingly they lost interest which could be why things go slightly haywire halfway through. All in all though it's a good English horror and worth watching, but you might try renting it first, as this could be a film that is considered a `cult', which is to say that you will either love it, or hate it...

I loved this film, really gritty, clearly done on hand held camera's which adds to the effect. The acting in some parts is incredible, especially the main character nick west (seen in Transformers) and some parts not so good, it takes some time to warm up but then it really kicks in. The narration through the film is brilliant idea and works so well. For the budget they clearly had, this had no detrimental effect on the film, the creature is just perfect, enough to make you feel uncomfortable. Just thinking about the voice over, it's really creepy actually, the way the lead character is speaking to you throughout the film and even in certain points mocks the film itself with the narration, which apparently they did whenever they didn't like a bit when editing. A bit trainspotting if ewan mcgregor was a complete psycho and some of the things he comes out with are truly messed up.

Really original film that disturbs and scares. Loved it!!

This is such a hard film to review without spoling so I will be very careful. A convicted lunatic murderer who claims to be innocent and in fact the victim of something supernatural is taken back to the scene of his crime by a group of scientists in a attempt to confront his delusions for the purposes of a book to be written about him. Once there the supernatural happenings surrounding the Devil's Chair of the title begin to happen, sucking people into some sort of hellish alternate reality where they are preyed on by quite a startling semi-CGI demon creature. Now the tricky part: The film seems to be over the top and campy with some terrible acting which smacks of directorial ineptitue. But trust me, this is how it was meant to be and it's to achieve a specific aim. If you enjoy campy gory low budget horror you will enjoy it and get more than you bargain for by the end, if you like something a bit more challenging keep watching. That's the most I can say, if ever you start to feel, "oh God this is stupid" don't give up on it, there's more to this movie. By the end I had realised the acting was actually great and this movie had something different to say and said it a brilliant, twisted and surprising way. UK film, R1 release.
