The synopsis of this film is cringingly clichéd, and it's easy to write off a film about an incident in an old abandoned mental hospital, that years later sees a handful of folk returning to document the incident, which includes a clutzy cameraman, old doctor, and sexy PA's and Intern, and the original survivor who had since been institutionalised himself. However this is actually a pretty good British horror, and of late there have been a few - The Hole, Dog Soldiers, Shrooms etc.
Former Hollyoaks hottie Elize Du Toit is great as the sexy intern, even though the comedy-element to the Matt Berry's character is awful, and the sexy PA is not the best actress that the world has ever seen. Andrew Howard is good as the lead guy, even if he comes straight out of the Jason Stratham acting school in his Transporter/Crank characters, with his voice being an English/American loud whisper, his expressionless frown, and his shaved head - don't get me wrong I think that `our Jase' is great, but this seemed like Andrew was his understudy.
The great things about the movie are the location, the way that the main character narrates comments whilst the movie pauses, the tension generated with superb cinematography, and of course having two songs by The Crimea in the first 10 minutes is always a bonus too.
The downside is that the movie gets a little too complicated for it's own good, the twist seemed a bit obvious from the start, and whilst we do deal with LSD trips, the evil characters could only have been drug-enduced!
Director Adam Mason, along with Simon Boyes directed the brilliant film `Broken', that was low budget and high tension, and all in all better than this. By the director's own admission, they started with the idea for this movie, were given a budget with such a tight deadline (10-14 days) that they rushed, and re-wrote coming up with different scenarios daily, and seemingly they lost interest which could be why things go slightly haywire halfway through. All in all though it's a good English horror and worth watching, but you might try renting it first, as this could be a film that is considered a `cult', which is to say that you will either love it, or hate it...
