Review

'David Gilman's debut The Devil's Breath is a lot of fun . . . the relationship between the two boys provides thrills and spills and the eco angle will go down well. What Gilman, a successful scriptwriter, does superlatively is heart-pounding action.' (Amanda Craig The Times )

'David Gilman's The Devil's Breath takes no hostages in an exciting fast paced story that never lets up.' (Indepedent )

The Times, June 9, 2007

... "Gilman has used all the tips that Laurens van der Post, H. Rider Haggard and Wilbur Smith could come up with" ...

I was fortunate enough to attend the Dorset Reading Conference last weekend, where David Gilman gave a couple of highly entertaining writing workshops. Apart from being a charasmatic character, his modest descriptions of his frankly exciting and courageous life to date leave one not just weak with laughter but aghast at the adventure he lived through as a young adult - bring on the autobiography. However, he is already an accomplished writer, for radio and television in the UK. As the mother of teenagers - and I work teaching children to read - I am always looking for the more sophisticated meaningful texts that some demand these days.
I have given up trying my boys and girls with the sort of books and authors I read in the 70's. Literacy levels have increased and the world has changed, and in my experience, many are not as 'mature' as we were. Writers like David Gilman, Malorie Blackman ( now being used by the RSC) and others, do seem to be bridging the gap perfectly.
The classics are not always the way forward with reluctant readers, and why should they be? This is hardly an easy read. Writers in this century need to embrace - just as Mr Gilman has - all the new goals and ideals that face the next generation with an awareness that the roles of girls and boys are now much more equal and the lines are blurred.
A modern writer for the demanding teenagers of today who brings all his own daring as well as sensitivity for the planet into this ripping yarn!
Gutsy stuff

I loved the beginning and climax to this book and got a tad bit bored in the middle but it was worth it in the end!

I really enjoyed the beginning of the story as we meet Max and find out about his father and Max sets of on his mission to find his dad. Then he meets !Koga and they travel through the Namibian desert together looking for Max's dad. I got a little bit bored during this bit because the book started to feel very long and I just really wanted to know how it was going to end becuase the plot was set up so well that I couldn't wait for the end, in a good way!

The last 100 pages were what really made the book great for me, the climax is written fantastically and doesn't disappoint. I would have given it 3 stars were it not for those last 100 pages or so.

If you've read the Young Bond books, this is very similar and you'll really like it!

Great Adventure 30 Jun 2007
By Cassie
Format:Paperback
Great story that captures you and takes you in from the first page. About 15 year old Max Gordon, who discovers that his father is missing and that someone wants Max dead too. Takes the reader on an adventure through hostile African country and describes Max's friendship with a native boy who helps Max in his quest to find his father. Involves ecological issues and some unexpected twists. Beautifully written, believable and equally as exciting as Anthony Horrowitz's Alex Rider series.
