POSSESSION. MURDER. MAYHEM. LET THE GAMES BEGIN...

Morgan Kingsley, is an exorcist who precariously walks that fine line between heaven and hell. She lives in a world in which demons co-exist with humans. Normally hailed as heroes, these demons can heal, help, and make strong the willing hosts who gladly accept their corporeal possession... unless a demon steps outside the boundaries of the law.

That's where Morgan, comes in. She is an expert in getting rogue demons to leave their unwilling hosts. But now the unthinkable has happened: Morgan's got a demon of her very own sharing - possibly overtaking - her body. But this sexy beast is so enticing that he may tempt Morgan to re-evaluate her prejudice against demons - if he doesn't get her killed first. For a war is brewing in the demon realm, and Morgan has just been forced to take sides...

4.0 out of 5 stars Buffy With Added Spice 9 Feb 2008
By Foggy Tewsday VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
In this fast-paced paranormal thriller, author Jenna Black introduces us to tough-gal exorcist, Morgan Kingsley. This is a world where demons coexist with humans in the most literal sense: they inhabit their willing hosts' bodies. However, demons who break the law or force themselves onto unwilling hosts are liable to exorcism. Morgan hates demons. She can't understand why anyone would allow themselves to be possessed by one. And then, the thing she dreads most happens: Morgan discovers that she is unwittingly hosting a demon.

The copious amounts of sex that lace this story may not be to everyone's taste and, I suspect, may put some potential readers off. Personally, I enjoy reading erotic fiction and watching erotic films. However, what I most balked at in this novel was not the male homosexual S & M scenes which are relevant to the story, but Morgan's lusty antics with her boyfriend. These didn't really add much in my opinion and could have been left out or toned down with little detrimental effect on the story. I mean, "attractive girl has healthy sexual relationship with her boyfriend" doesn't really have to be spelled out for us if the story is not an out-and-out piece of erotica. However, these scenes are not prominent and they are well written.

Indeed, the standard of Jenna Black's writing is very high. Particularly good are the scenes in the book's later chapters that take place in the cavernous surroundings of an S & M club where we are introduced to the malevolent Shae, a nasty piece of work who I hope will return in further Morgan Kingsley adventures.

The concept of demons inhabiting humans in this story is one that I found fascinating. The demons have the ability to heal their hosts if they are injured (a boon to S & M lovers!

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great 31 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Morgan Kingsley is an exorcist in trouble. She's hated demons her whole life, both the legal and illegal ones, and made a living from destroying those rouge ones. She's the best in the country at it. But now Morgan's worst nightmare has come alive. She's been possessed. But her demon can't control her, not completely, and can only communicate directly with her in her dreams. That's more than enough for Morgan though, and she'd do anything to get rid of him and the temptation he brings.

As Morgan struggles to find out why and how she was possessed, she finds herself equally targeted by others, both human and demon, and fighting for her life. In desperation she has little choice, but to turn to the demons she's always despised for help.

The first book in the Morgan Kingsley series starts off pretty quick and moves at a decent pace. Morgan isn't the easiest of characters to like and her feelings often contradict her words and actions making you wonder what she's actually feeling or thinking. But the story around her is good enough to keep reading. I didn't find myself sucking particularly, and rather than feeling the ups and downs with Morgan, I felt like a spectator. I feel we were meant to feel bad for Morgan a lot, without really being given a reason to love her enough for it so soon. I also found a few of the secondary characters a bit flat and there wasn't always enough explanation to go with their actions. There is also some graphic S & M and more sex than there really needed to be (both with Morgan and her boyfriend, and a homosexual couple helping her - which really did nothing for me), more there for show than because it had a reason, but I could put up with it.

Overall, none of that was enough to stop me finishing the book within a few days, and I intend to pick up the next one. It's a good enough read, but it's not about to become a favourite of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes a change from Vampires and Werewolves 30 May 2011
Format:Paperback
As usual i wanted something slightly different to read and didn't want to go down the vampire/werewolf route as i have been watching quite a lot of that on tv recently with True Blood and Vampire diaries. Don't get me wrong i absolutely love both of these programmes but i didn't want to read about them as well.

As others have already mentioned this book is about a society where demons are hosted in humans either legally or illegally. Morgan is an exorcist whose job it is to oust the illegal demons who apparently are then destroyed. Morgan despises demons be it the legal or illegal type so she is shocked to discover that she has unwittingly been possessed herself. There is of course more to the story than this which basically involves an underworld of demons ready to do battle to get what they want.

I raced through this book, admittedly it isn't that long, and if i had started it earlier on the sunday would have read it in a day. I knew half way through that i would want to read the next in the series but thought i would wait to finish reading it just in case it had a rubbish ending. I am pleased to say it didn't. I have just received the next four books so will be devouring them fairly soon.

This book does have adult content so may not be to everyone's taste but there is a good storyline if you can cope with the sex scenes.

I have already lent my copy to a friend so it will be interesting to see what she thinks.

By The Demon Librarian TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I'm not overly comfortable with the S&M aspect to this book, so that's the first downside for me. Each to their own though. I know some people appreciated it for exactly this reason. Other than that I thought the premise for this story was very good. Unlike anything I have read before, so that's a plus. There were a good number of clues and hints given out which makes me intrigued as to where the character is going to end up, and also about her back story. The protagonist is good, quite likable, if a bit self-absorbed. I will be reading the next one.
