Product Description

All five episodes from the fifth series of the BBC comedy series expanded from occasional short sketches on Jasper Carrott's 'Canned Carrott' show. Jasper Carrot and Robert Powell star as bumbling duo Detective Constables Bob Louis and David Briggs, promoted well beyond their crime-fighting talents. In the never-ending high-tech war against crime they are the Scud missiles of the police arsenal: inefficient, unreliable and utterly aimless. Episodes are: 'Special Branch', 'Cardiac Arrest', 'The Beast of Hackney Marshes', 'The Curse of the Commanches', 'Best Man', 'Mine's a Large One' and 'Go West Old Man'.

Synopsis

Accidently promoted far beyond their level of competence, Detectives Louis and Briggs stumble from crime to crime relying on a unique blend of intuition, hunches and inspired guesses...all of them hopelessly wrong. Starring Jasper Carrott and Robert Powell this DVD contains every episode from the fifth series.

This, the fifth and final series of The Detectives contained some of the very best episodes, including Cardiac Arrest where the hapless duo have to guard an armed robbery suspect in hospital and fall prey to Louis' hypochondria as well as The Beast Of Hackney Marshes - the best episode ever where they try and track down the source of mysterious goings on in the Marshes and spend the night there with Nozzer, the uniformed sergeant wonderfully played by Tony Selby.

Unlike many other comedy series, the final series of this wonderful show went out on a high and is defintely recommended to all. As a bonus, it also includes the 1997 Christmas Special Go West Gold Man which concluded the series in great style.

This DVD contains all six episodes from the fifth series of 'The Detectives' and a special episode from December 1997. In many ways it was a shame that these were the last episodes, but they do bring the series to a nice conclusion.

'Special Branch' is a scream; it involves Louis and Briggs pretending to be hippies, complete with a Volkswagen minivan, fabulous wigs and a hilarious song. 'The Curse of the Comanches' is also very amusing, it involves a Comanche chief helping the duo track down an Indian carving.

'Mine's a large one' features a some lovely location filming on the Thames in London. 'Go West, Old Man' is the last ever episode of the show and it's very entertaining, it features Louis and Briggs following Superintendent Cottam to Canada to convince him to return to England. During the episode Jasper Carrott namedrops both Cannon Hill Park and Solihull which is nice.

Single review for all five series - so stupid you can't help laugh throughout. Carrot and Christ make it fantastic - family entertainment - ageless, comparable to Fools and Horses, as do few others.
Shame not available in Box set any longer - couldn't wait and please don't bring it out now I've bought them separately. Loved every silly moment!

Very funny, infact laugh out loud funny in every episode. Jasper Carrott is superb in this as is George Sewell. Its a shame this series came to an end, the writing is very clever and jokes are cleverly written into an action packed storyline in each episode. One of the (if not THE) best comedies of the 1990's

Robert Powell has been a good actor for years. Jasper Carrott however is better known for his stand up comedy and TV appearances but does an excellent job of being what I feel is No 2 to Mr Powell. His timing is excellent and has the ability to laugh at his own situations - if not him then it will be you the viewer. There really are some classic sketches in this series and well worth the small layout for all 5 series. They always raise a smile, often outrageous laughing and provide that feel good factor when needed. I have not reviewed all series individually but just this one. With JC you either love him or hate him. If you love him then give yourself a treat and buy the full series.

Quality scripts and brilliant comic timing from Jasper, and a truly inspired showing from Robert Powell who matches his co-star all the way. The only grouch I would have is the fact the series was stretched out to 5 disks when there are only a handful of episodes on each disk, but that is a criticism of the BBC video library rather than the show itself, which is still superb decades after its original release.

Still funny after all these years. This is a time when the action was slower but the laughs came thick and fast. Robert Powell and Jasper Carrot work well together as a couple of bungling detectives and George Sewell makes the ideal foil. Well worth watching.
