Review

'Intrigue, high-life and low-life are brilliantly interwoven . . . the historical details are utterly convincing' Lawrence James 'Stephen has a good feel for the momentary decisions that can help to shape the course of history - as well, of course, as the cowardice, vainglory and greed' THE TIMES 'Dastardly political and religious manoeuvrings ... all add up to a terrific book, the first of a long series, we must hope.' SPECTATOR 'Henry Gresham is a hero for all seasons' Val McDermid 'Here is a Machiavellian plot from the mind of a master.' HISTORICAL NOVELS REVIEW

By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This book is set in London at the time of the Gunpowder Plot and follows the hero, Henry Gresham, as he follows a trail of conspiracy as dangerous and unpredictable as the gunpowder it leads to.
It is a great read from start to finish as it has every thing you wish for in a novel - electric atmosphere, fantastic twists and characters which pull you into their lives and keep you there. It is so brilliantly vivid and descriptive that you really do experience a journey into the past and feel as if you too are present in the fatally treacherous streets of Jacobean London.
A must not just for fans of historical drama but for everyone who enjoys a good thriller.

This is a great book for a taste of something different, it submerges you into the dirty lowdown world of Jacobean London and unravels a web of plotting surrounding the Guy Fawkes story that is scarcely believable, were it not true. Some coarseness, but the pace is masterful and the plot gripping. There are surprises round every corner and you can really get a feel for the time, flickering candles, dank passages and splashes of oars through the mist on the Thames. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in an exciting antidote to clinical modern life.

Truly awful 25 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
I'm sorry to have to write this but I really couldn't bring myself to read past the third chapter. The banal language and awkward dialogue were enough to make me take the book back (I bought it at Waterstone's, not online).
I cannot understand how anyone could consider this to be well-written, interesting or even mildly entertaining. I expected better of such a highly-respected author.
