The Desert Sessions albums, recorded at Rancho de la Luna, are collaborations led by Josh Homme (QOTSA). This CD includes Volume 9 – “I see you hearin me” and Volume 10 – “I heart disco” For this instalment PJ Harvey has come along for the ride with stunning results. Her vocals are perfectly complimented by Homme’s all the way through the album. An outstanding example of this is on the brilliant “Crawl home” where PJ also cuts a cracking bass-line. Other high points on the album include “Wanna make it wit you” an upbeat pop-ish number sung by Homme with the irreplaceable PJ backing him up. “A girl like me” is arguably Harvey’s best song, her husky vocals are interwoven with a superbly atmospheric layer of sound, to create a catchy toe-tapping track.
“There will never be a better time” is truly haunting; hard to believe it was only performed once. Mr Homme aka “J-Ho” gets a well deserved break, with. Harvey wailing to a Spanish style rhythm, manically strum by Chris Goss (Masters of Reality).
In short this album contains something for everyone, from the insanely funky “Subcutaneous Phat” to the utterly bizarre “Sheperds Pie” (No points for guessing what this ones about!) This album is well worth a look, a marvellous creation that took a meagre 8 days to produce. Now go out and give this CD a Homme.

Can this man do no wrong? Two legendary bands, numerous fantastic side projects & it just gets better & better. With an inspired move to bring in the amazing PJ Harvey as well as roping in the usual suspects (Chris Goss, Alain Johannes etc) Mr Homme has done it again. 'There will never be a better time' is PJ to the max, a coruscating vocal teamed with a flamenco-ish giutar for maximum effect, 'In My Head...Or Something' sounds like QOTSA covering a happy Joy Division and 'I Wanna Make It Wit Chu' is the coolest lounge song I've ever heard.
In short, its everything you would expect from the Desert Sessions & more - wildly eclectic (the brilliantly titled 'Subcutaneous Phat' is a dance record sounding not too disimilar to The Chemical Brothers), throwaway tracks like 'Shepherds Pie' (a song about shepherds pie) but mainly containg such moments of raw beauty that you just wish every record could be recorded like this one.

Josh Homme is best known as the genius behind Queens Of The Stone Age, one of the greatest rock bands of recent times. But the singer, songwriter and expert guitarist also works on numerous low-key side projects, including the Desert Sessions - a collaborative effort where he recruits some of his musican friends to spend a week writing and recording a full album’s worth of material in one week at the Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, California. Volume 9 & 10 is the latest installment of the Desert Sessions series, and the guest list is more interesting than ever: QOTSA bandmates Joey Castillo and Troy Van Leeuwen, past QOTSA contributors Dave Catching and Alain Johannes, Masters Of Reality frontman and Rated R producer Chris Goss, ex-Marilyn Manson/A Perfect Circle guitarist Twiggy Ramirez, Ween maestro Dean Ween and English rock goddess PJ Harvey. And the results are not disappointing. In fact, Desert Sessions 9 & 10 is a must for all QOTSA fans.
The opener Dead In Love is one of the standout tracks, as good a song as any Homme has set his name to. Carried by his own powerful, soulful lead vocals, it’s a heady, dizzying guitar-and-saxophone meltdown that manages to be menacing, sinister and sexy in the way that only QOTSA can. I Wanna Make It Wit Chu is an irresistably tongue-in-cheek, booty-shakin’ funk number whose chorus will be firmly lodged in your brain after one listen. Bring It Back Gentle is a relentless narcotic drone reminiscent of The Sky Is Fallin from QOTSA’s brilliant last album Songs For The Deaf.
One of Desert Sessions 9 & 10’s strongest features is the presence of the great PJ Harvey, who sings on four tracks and also plays piano, bass, saxophone, melodica and tambourine.

This was the first Desert Sessions that I had bought but my interest in Josh Homme's previously mighty project[KYUSS]and his current mightier project[QOTSA]led me to believe that this unique album was an essential purchase. The songs certainly didn't disappoint. The opener,'Dead in Love' manages to be both chilling and insanely cathcy, with Josh[who refers to himself as J-HO on the inside cover]supplying typically drugged out harmonies over a mesh of twisted guitars. The song concludes with an atmospheric piano piece from the infinitely talented PJ Harvey, who is a welcome and prolific contributor to the album.Any notion that the album will be dark and moody throughout is quickly dispelled with the sublime second track, 'I Wanna Make It Wit Chu'.This is a blissful pop song which if released by a boy band would probably stay at no.1 for the rest of time;but which will no doubt only be listened to by the lucky few.Anyway it has J-Ho softly murmuring the lyrics with a roomful of backing vocals, with a beautiful result.PJ Harvey dominates the later track "There's never Been A Better Time"which basically has old Polly wailing over a hypnotic guitar rhythm. She creates the sort of cathartic wailing not seen since a Gwyneth Paltrow acceptance speech.J-Ho and PJ actually combine on the song "Crawl Home", which is arguably the highpoint of the album. She's the call,he's the result and what comes out is funkier than Beyonce at a roller disco. The album carries on in this vein with the stand-out tracks probably being "In my Head....Or Something" which is another pop gem and "Bring It Back Gentle",a musical opus that features about 10 artists playing at the same time.Buy this album and enjoy.
